Job Description
Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
This role is essential in supporting departmental leadership in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. The primary responsibility is to handle both emergency and non-emergency calls, assess the nature of each situation, and promptly dispatch the appropriate number of police units. The dispatcher serves as a key communication link between campus police, college administrators, and the public.
In addition to dispatch duties, this position provides administrative support to departmental leadership, including managing schedules and communications, assisting with procurement processes, and preparing related reports for supervisory personnel such as the Chief and Sergeant.
- This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (Clery Act) and Responsible Employee (Title IX).
- The position may require an occasional alternative work schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA’s/Required Qualifications- High School diploma or GED.
- Must obtain certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a police dispatcher within six months of start date and maintain throughout employment.
- Must obtain, within six months of start date, and maintain certification as an operator of the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) computer system.
- Requires either United States Citizenship or having been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years to apply for VCIN Certification.

- Limited to 1,500 hours annually

- Knowledge of effective customer service techniques.
- Knowledge of communications equipment (i.e., radios, telephones, cell phones, etc.) and usage.
- Familiar with administrative procedures and practices.
- Familiar with law enforcement principles and practices.
- Familiar with maintaining files and records.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent keyboarding skills: ability to type at a minimum of 30 wpm.
- Computer literacy; proficient in Microsoft applications.
- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle personal and private information with discretion.
- Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively with department members, the campus community, and the public.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Handle feedback and direct concerns to the appropriate responder.
- Interpret and follow established policies and procedures.
- Use sound judgment to make informed decisions in high-stress situations.
- Work independently.
