Job Overview

Pipe Welder – Fabrication. Colonial Webb is seeking a skilled Pipe Welder to join our Fabrication Team in Richmond, VA. The role involves layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, and welding of piping systems and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, and industrial processing systems.

Location & Hours

2820 Ackley Avenue, Richmond, VA 23228. Fabrication shop environment.

Hours:

6:00AM – 2:30PM, Monday‑Friday.

Responsibilities
  • Lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, and weld piping systems, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Determine required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
  • Perform MIG root and flux‑core fill and cap; operate electric, gas, arc, MIG, TIG, and stick welding apparatus.
  • Secure pipes to structure with clamps, brackets, and hangers; select appropriate pipe sizes and materials.
  • Remove slag and rough spots with grinder, file, or scraper.
  • Cut pipe using pipe cutters, port‑a‑band saw, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine.
  • Assemble and install metal pipe and fittings, including carbon steel and stainless steel.
  • Operate shop forklift and lift or transport equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Load and unload shop materials from trucks into the building.
  • Teach, coach, and provide direction to apprentices and helpers on safe and quality work.
  • Comply with and promote health and safety regulations.
Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain AWS 6G certification through Colonial Webb.
  • Experience with roll welding, MIG, TIG, and stick welding methods.
  • Knowledge of welding rods, fluxes, and material properties.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Ability to read and work from drawings, submittals, and specifications.
  • Basic construction/shop math skills (addition, subtraction, division, fraction, multiplication).
  • Ability to work within precise limits and accuracy standards.
  • Capability to work a flexible schedule, including unscheduled overtime, nights, and weekends.
