Position OverviewTier 1 Supplemental Staffing RNs support VCU Health System by floating to multiple units within inpatient areas, including adults and pediatrics. The flex pool operates 24/7 across inpatient units, procedural areas, Periop, and other specialties. Reassignments may occur in 4-hour blocks, with opportunities to float to other VCUHS facilities.
Job Levels and Responsibilities Clinical Nurse IIDemonstrates mastery of clinical skills, applying knowledge to specific patient populations. Assists with prevention, wellness, and comfort. Recognizes and responds to patient changes, mobilizes resources, provides direction, education, and leadership at the unit level. Delivers and documents age-specific care based on medical orders and multidisciplinary plans. Safely administers medications, identifying interactions.
Clinical Nurse IIIDemonstrates advanced clinical knowledge, applying it to patient populations. Assists with prevention, wellness, and comfort. Anticipates patient changes, provides direction, education, and acts as a role model. Delivers and documents age-specific care, safely administers medications, and identifies interactions.
Performance Expectations- Continuing
Education:
Complete 15 contact hours annually; 20 hours for CN-III. Failure impacts performance ratings. - Nursing Process: Use assessment, evaluation, and planning skills to deliver patient care and coordinate discharge planning.
- Nurse–Patient Relationship: Develop therapeutic relationships, communicate effectively, and involve patients/families in care planning.
- Education: Assess learning needs, develop teaching plans, and evaluate understanding.
- Leadership/
Collaboration:
Participate in unit activities, utilize resources, and engage in evidence-based practice and professional development. - Special Projects: Volunteer for or support special projects and initiatives.
Required
Education:
Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing; RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state.
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing;
Specialty certification for CN-III.
Experience: 12-24 months RN experience for CN-II; 3+ years for CN-III.
Skills: Follow physician orders, practice within Virginia regulations, adhere to ANA Code of Ethics, work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Flexibility in scheduling as needed.
Additional InformationPhysical requirements include lifting up to 50 lbs., exposure to hazardous substances, prolonged standing, and other physical activities. The environment is fast-paced, requiring strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, and effective communication.
