Overview
Tier 1 Supplemental Staffing RNs provide support to the organization by floating to multiple units and/or areas within the VCU Health System (VCUHS). This flex pool includes Registered Nurses who work within inpatient areas to include adults and/or pediatrics. The flex pool provides support 24/7 to VCUHS inpatient units, procedural areas, Perioperative areas, and other specialties within VCUHS. Reassignment may occur in 4-hour blocks.
This may also include opportunities to float to other VCUHS facilities.
- Deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific care to patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
- Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
- Demonstrate leadership, direction, education, and collaboration at the unit level and participate in multidisciplinary care planning.
- Mobilize resources to meet the individualized needs of patients and families; anticipate and respond to changes in patient situations.
- Provide care within inpatient areas, procedural areas, Perioperative and other specialties; participate in 24/7 coverage and unit rotation.
- Clinical Nurse II
:
Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, applies knowledge to a specific patient population, supports illness prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort; uses nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care; documents care; administers medications safely; provides direction and education; initiates discharge planning; coordinates through multidisciplinary teams. - Clinical Nurse III
:
Demonstrates unit-level clinical knowledge, anticipates changes in patient situations, serves as a role model, provides direction and education, and documents age-specific care within an integrated plan of care. Administers medications safely and uses best practices with evidence-based care.
- Performance Expectation:
Pertains to staff in licensed Nursing positions ONLY — Completion of required continuing education hours. - Performance Expectation:
Nursing Process — Competent use of the nursing process, focused assessments, sound clinical decisions, care prioritization, discharge planning, and multidisciplinary coordination. - Performance Expectation:
Nurse-Patient Relationship — Develops therapeutic relationships, adapts communication, involves patient/family in planning, and mobilizes resources to support outcomes. - Performance Expectation:
Education — Commitment to patient and family learning; develops teaching plans; for staff, identifies learning needs and educational plans. - Performance Expectation:
Leadership/Collaboration and Professional Development — Participates in unit/division activities, uses evidence to guide practice, engages in problem solving, and promotes collaborative relationships. - Performance Expectation:
Performs other Duties and Participates in Special Projects — Volunteers or participates in special projects; supports mission and team dynamics; delegates as needed.
- REQUIRED: Clin II or Clin III;
Diploma or Associate Degree from an approved nursing program. - All RNs without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing must enroll in an approved RN-to-BSN program within two years of start date and complete within five years unless grandfathered.
- Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher);
Clin III certification in specialty area.
- REQUIRED: Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligibility in a compact state.
- REQUIRED: Clin II: 12–24 months RN experience;
Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience. - Academic health care experience; experience with similar patient populations in acute care or applicable practice area.
Skills and Abilities
- Follows physician/licensed provider orders; practices within Virginia nursing regulations; adheres to ANA Code of Ethics and VCUHS policies.
- Shifts include weekends and holidays; shift rotation with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager; schedules may be adjusted to meet unit needs.
- Ages Served: appropriate to unit assignment.
- Physical:
Lifting 0–50 lbs; exposure to hazardous and infectious substances; prolonged standing/sitting; frequent bending; walking; climbing; reaching. - Mental/Sensory:
Strong memory, reasoning, problem solving; hearing; clear speech; reading and writing; logical thinking. - Emotional:
Fast/steady pace; ability to handle multiple priorities; intense patient interactions; potentially noisy environment.
