Overview
The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at VCU Health is the largest and most advanced in the region and has earned the highest distinction of a Level 4 accreditation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Experienced RNs are encouraged to apply to this expanding unit that prioritizes patient safety and nurse education of this specialized population. The Clinical Nurse I–III positions integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family.
These roles assist the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, provision of comfort, and delivery and documentation of direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. These roles also safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Clinical Nurse I:
- Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs.
- Assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
- Delivers and documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.
- Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Clinical Nurse II:
- Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population.
- Assists with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
- Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately; mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs of patients and families.
- Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level; delivers and documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.
- Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Clinical Nurse III:
- Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population.
- Assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
- Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately; serves as a role model and provides direction and education in a clinical setting.
- Delivers and documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.
- Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
For Hire:
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state.
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia; AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Required:
- Clin I: N/A - Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience - Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
Experience Preferred:
- Clin I:
Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in an acute care setting or applicable area of practice - Clin II, Clin III:
Academic health care experience; experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting or applicable area of practice
Required:
- Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Diploma or Associate Degree from a professional nursing program recognized/approved by the respective state's Board of Nursing.
- All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start and to complete within five years, unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
Preferred:
- Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program - Clin III:
Certification in a specialty area
Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders. Practices within the regulations governing the practice of nursing in Virginia. Practices according to the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards. All practice follows VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.
Supervisory Responsibilities (if applicable)Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
Position Requirements
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules, including shift rotations and hours of work, may be adjusted to meet unit requirements and/or as needed.
