Overview
The Division of Nephrology at VCU is seeking an APP for a general nephrology position in an academic medical center. This position will include cross coverage for dialysis and CKD management. There is potential for ambulatory and inpatient roles depending on candidate experience and divisional needs. Experience in ambulatory, dialysis, and value‑based care roles preferred. New graduate providers welcome.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP—NP, PA) provides high‑quality medical and/or surgical patient care. This position provides care to patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with the Attending Physician. The APP may perform diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or preventive healthcare services on a collaborative APP/Physician team.
The APP may perform histories and physicals; order and interpret tests; diagnose; treat injuries/illness; assist with surgical procedures; counsel patients and/or prescribe medications and those invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The APP works collaboratively with the medical team to deliver organized, timely, cost-effective and quality patient care. Care is provided under a defined departmental and state‑approved scope of practice with the collaboration of an Attending Physician(s).

- Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities
:
Demonstrates mastery of treatment and patient care of the specialty population served; coordinates patient care across the continuum of services through the patient’s illness trajectory; assesses health status through histories and physical exams, initiates screening, orders or performs diagnostic tests, provides direct patient care, assists with surgical procedures, intervenes therapeutically, prescribes medications and counsels patients. Initiates emergency procedures as needed;
practices safety, environmental and infection control; rounds with Attending physicians; supervises and/or coordinates activities of patient care and support staff; documents information in the medical record; develops treatment plans; prioritizes short- and long-term plans; incorporates physical, spiritual, cultural and psychosocial aspects of patients and families; seeks to decrease length of stay and resource use; maintains communication with the health care team;
supports care coordination between primary and specialty services when needed. - Consultation

Serves as a consultant to other health care professionals; collaborates on the multi-disciplinary plan of care for complex patients; participates in patient education and training of staff as needed; promotes teamwork and effective communication; recognizes team as essential to outcomes. - Research
:
Utilizes current research to develop and evaluate standards of care; contributes to the profession through research, publications, consultation and/or educational activities; supports clinical trials within the specialty area. - Ethical Decision Making Skills

Applies clinical judgment and ethical decision making; promotes interdisciplinary decision making; negotiates and collaborates with families; supports patient rights and values in treatment decisions. - Professional Development

Employment Qualifications- Required Education
:
Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program. - Preferred Education
