Position: Registered Nurse (RN) - Medicine Specialty Unit - Rotating

Position Overview

Our Medicine Specialty Unit is a 32‑bed medicine unit that specializes in the care of patients with sickle cell disease. Nurses are trained in advanced education on the management of sickle cell disease and work with hospitalist teams – attending physicians and advanced practice providers – to care for patients with a wide range of medical diagnoses.

Responsibilities Clinical Nurse I
  • Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and family.
  • Assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
  • Provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level.
  • Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Clinical Nurse II
  • Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply knowledge to a specific patient population.
  • Assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
  • Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately.
  • Mobilizes resources to meet the individualized needs of patient/families.
  • Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
  • Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Clinical Nurse III
  • Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population.
  • Assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
  • Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately.
  • Provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting.
  • Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Qualifications
  • Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
    Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state for ClinI, II,III.
  • Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
    Current RN licensure in Virginia; AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent for all levels.
  • Experience Requirements:
    ClinI – N/A;
    ClinII – 12 to 24 months RN experience;
    ClinIII – 3 years of clinical experience.
  • Preferred Experience:

    ClinI – experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner;
    ClinII/III – Academic Health Care Experience;
    ClinIII – Certification in specialty area.
  • Education/Training Requirements:
    Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the state’s Board of Nursing. All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete the program within five years of start date unless grandfathered.
  • Preferred Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher.

Position Requirements
  • Work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Individual shift rotation and schedule will be established with the Nurse Manager / Practice Manager.
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting 20‑50 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking a distance, climbing steps or ladder, reaching overhead, repetitive movements.
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent intense interactions, noisy environment, steady pace.
