Tier 1 Supplemental Staffing RNs support the VCU Health System by floating to multiple inpatient units, procedural areas, peri‑operative and other specialties on a 24/7 basis. Reassignment may occur in 4‑hour blocks, and float opportunities exist across VCUHS facilities.
ResponsibilitiesProvide direct, age‑specific nursing care based on medical orders and multidisciplinary care plans. Assess patients, recognize changes, and intervene appropriately. Use the nursing process to develop and adjust care plans, educate patients and families, and coordinate discharge planning. Assure accurate documentation, safe medication administration and compliance with VCUHS policies and VAGH regulations.
Performance Expectations- Complete the required continuing nursing education hours each evaluation cycle (15 hours for RN; 20 hours for CN‑III).
- Demonstrate competence in the nursing process, patient relationship, education, leadership, collaboration, and professional development as outlined in the clinical nursing framework.
- Volunteer for special projects, accept alternate assignments, and assist team members to support the mission of VCUHS.
Required
- Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program approved by the state Board of Nursing.
- All RNs without a Bachelor’s degree must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete it within five years.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
- For Clinical Nurse III: certification in a specialty area.
Current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible compact state.
Experience Required- Clinical Nurse II: 12–24 months RN experience.
- Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience.
- Academic health‑care experience and experience with similar patient populations.
- Follow documented physician/provider orders and practice within VA nursing regulations.
- Apply ANA Code of Ethics and VCUHS policies.
- Work all shifts, weekends and holidays with rotating schedules.
- Lifting 0–50 lbs.
- Exposure to hazardous and infectious substances.
- Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking, writing, reading, logical thinking.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, noisy environment.
As appropriate based on unit assignment.
