Mental Health Nurse, RN Nurse
Richmond Behavioral Health offers PRN positions for Registered Nurses (RN) in our CSU Division. The role requires skilled human support and administrative work, including medication administration, assessments, record keeping, and participation in clinical meetings.
Job Duties- Admit clients to the program in the absence of clinical staff; obtain physician orders; collaborate with pharmacy; transcribe orders.
- Administer medications both intramuscularly and orally.
- Complete nursing assessments and medically related assessments ordered by the prescriber.
- Facilitate psycho‑educational groups for clients.
- Supervise staff on assigned shift; oversee monitors and manage unit operations in the absence of the Unit/Nursing Supervisor in collaboration with on‑call medical and clinical staff.
- Draw blood and perform urine drug screens; label specimens via computer printout; administer and interpret TB tests; process gel‑top blood tubes via centrifuge; assist, monitor and track lab results.
- Maintain thorough documentation of daily activities including nursing and treatment services.
- Attend and participate on treatment team; attend staff meetings as required.
- Coordinate schedules and ensure appropriate levels of nursing services to clients, including monitoring, administration and documentation of injections, venipunctures and other nursing services; collaborate with treatment providers.
- Schedule lab tests, injections and electrocardiograms; reschedule appointments missed by clients with case manager.
- Respond to medical emergency situations and call emergency medical services for consumers and staff when warranted.
- Coordinate medical and psychiatric needs of clients with medical staff.
- Enter data into computer database for new clients; update client data when needed; research client information/insurance status.
- Refer clients to community resources for housing, dental clinics, NA and AA groups, food pantry, health clinics, primary care physicians, library for research or computer use, etc.
- Maintain ongoing and current competency requirements for licensure.
- Attend trainings, meetings and seminars as required.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of nursing principles, standards, practices and techniques, including management of medical detoxification and care of individuals with mental illnesses in crisis; understanding of medication risks and precautions; familiarity with psychiatric–medical treatments, diagnostics, immunizations and related services; competency with facility nursing policies and procedures; accurate medical record maintenance and reporting; and ability to establish effective relationships with clients, supervisors, medical personnel, community partners, vendors and the public.
Position RequirementsEducation and Experience
Associate’s degree or higher in nursing and at least one year of experience working with individuals with serious mental illnesses. BSN preferred. QMHP registration required upon hire.
Special Requirements- Current license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- CPR certification.
- Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Computer proficiency.
Work Type:
Full‑Time/Part‑Time PRN.
Starting Salary Range: $41.45 per hour.
