Job Description

School Nurses are responsible for providing health care services to students in a school setting. They work closely with school staff, parents, and healthcare providers to promote the health and well‑being of students. Their duties may include performing health screenings, administering medication, managing student health records, and providing first aid and emergency care when necessary. A school nurse may also educate students and staff on health‑related topics and develop health‑related policies and procedures for the school.

They must be certified as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in their state and possess excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the coordinator of nursing, the school health education committee, and administrators in developing an effective school health program.
  • Supervise CNA.
  • Participate in the work of the Health Services team and serve as a health education resource person to staff, students and parents.
  • Prepare and distribute Health Services information to students, staff members, and parents.
  • Participate in school programs for immunizations, physical examinations, and sight and hearing testing as directed by the Coordinator of School Health Services.
  • Conduct medical case finding, screening, and referral activities related to health defects of selected students.
  • Observe students regularly to detect health needs.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date cumulative health records on all students.
  • Refer parents of pupils needing medical care to appropriate private or community resources.
  • Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters, as directed by the Coordinator of School Health Services, and provide emergency nursing services for sick or injured students at school.
  • Notify parents of students about illnesses, physical defects, and potential health problems and provide health counseling.
  • Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Administer first aid by establishing first aid procedures.
  • Implement Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Prepare mandated health and developmental workups and updates on all special education students as assigned.
  • Provide appropriate follow‑through with special education students, parents, and staff and apprises the IEP team of medical problems of special education students as assigned.
  • Assist with verification of selected student absences by home or telephone contacts with parents.
  • Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools and the identification and correction of safety and health hazards in schools.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development by attending workshops, lectures, and institutes on specific subjects to enhance job performance.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Requires a valid Virginia license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Successful completion of a program leading to a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse License;
    Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Excellent oral, and written communication, organizational, and public relations skills are essential.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively with children, young adults, families, teachers, and school administrators.
  • Must have an understanding of public school education procedures and policies.
  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of the coordination of health care service delivery, related service providers, community agencies, and other resource providers.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and must be adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively handle multiple assignments simultaneously and have the ability to work efficiently under minimum on‑site supervision.
  • Experience with window-based computers is required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Meet, Google Docs, internet and email applications preferred.

Position Type: Full‑Time

Salary: $39,045 to $93,164 Per Year
