About the Acute Neuroscience Trauma UnitThe Acute Neuroscience Trauma unit is the primary unit for neurology and neurosurgery patients—acute and progressive care. We are a Level I Trauma Center and Joint Commission‑accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center of Excellence. The patient population we serve includes brain and spinal cord injuries, strokes, seizures, and various movement disorders. Experienced RNs are encouraged to apply to this fast‑paced, high‑acuity unit where you will grow your knowledge in caring for patients with lumbar drains, stable ventilators, tracheostomies, complex wounds, and post‑operative care.
Our unit collaborates with other services to provide the safest, patient‑centered care. We have a highly engaged nurse resiliency team and strong teamwork.
Clinical Nurse I – The role integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge. Duties include assisting the health‑care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintaining wellness, providing comfort, offering direction and education, documenting direct, age‑specific care, administering prescribed medications, and identifying incompatibilities or interactions.
Clinical Nurse II – Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Duties include assessing patient changes, intervening appropriately, mobilizing resources for individualized care, providing leadership at the unit level, and similar documentation and medication administration responsibilities as Clinical Nurse I.
Clinical Nurse III – Demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge and serves as a role model. Duties include anticipating changes, intervening preemptively, educating staff, providing leadership, and accurate documentation and medication administration.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire- Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state.
- Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia and AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
- Clin I: N/A
- Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
- Clin III: 3 years clinical experience
- Clin I:
Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or applicable area of practice. - Clin II and Clin III:
Academic health‑care experience; experience with similar patient population in an acute care setting or applicable area of practice.
- Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and approved by the state’s Board of Nursing.
All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN‑to‑BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within five years, unless grandfathered.
Education/Training Preferred- Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program. - Clin III:
Certification in specialty area.
- Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
- Practice within the boundaries of nursing regulations in Virginia.
- Adhere to ANA Code of Ethics and national nursing practice standards.
- Follow VCUHS policies and procedures.
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Organize work and delegate and supervise others (RN’s, LPN’s, care partners, unit secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
