Archaeological Compliance & Project Support
- Coordinate with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs) to obtain and review archaeological and cultural resource information.
- Review, oversee, and support active archaeological projects in coordination with Historic Preservation staff.
- Determine appropriate archaeological protection measures for construction projects and real property disposal activities.
- Participate in project meetings and consultations involving archaeological resources, cultural concerns, and NAGPRA-related requirements.
- Develop recommendations to avoid, minimize, or mitigate impacts to archaeological sites and cultural resources.
- Prepare and review archaeological Statements of Qualifications (SOQs), work plans, technical reports, and monitoring plans.
- Create and maintain a library of standardized templates and supporting documentation.
- Draft archaeological sections for environmental and preservation-related documents, including:
- Determinations of Eligibility
- Building Preservation Plans
- Archaeological Assessments
- Cultural Resource Documentation
- Review archaeological monitoring reports, environmental reports, and related technical documents, providing detailed comments and recommendations.
- Review and provide recommendations on proposed agreements, regulations, policy updates, and procedural changes affecting archaeological compliance requirements.
- Develop internal guidance, procedures, and best practices for managing archaeological artifacts discovered during surveys and construction activities.
- Support the development of policies focused on artifact management, reburial practices, and minimizing unnecessary artifact collection.
- Create project-specific guidance and training materials to assist construction personnel in identifying and reporting inadvertent discoveries.
- Assist with Independent Government Estimates (IGEs).
- Review and compile historical files and records associated with active archaeological sites.
- Develop archaeological specifications aligned with agency historic preservation standards.
- Survey and inventory archaeological artifacts across multiple locations and coordinate efforts to catalog information within centralized databases.
- Support the transmission and receipt of archaeological documentation to and from federal, state, and tribal agencies.
- Draft responses to stakeholder inquiries regarding archaeological resources, compliance requirements, and project impacts.
- Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resource Management, or a related field.
- Professional experience supporting archaeological investigations, cultural resource management, or historic preservation programs.
- Knowledge of federal cultural resource and historic preservation regulations.
- Experience coordinating with SHPOs, THPOs, and other regulatory agencies.
- Strong technical writing, editing, and document review experience.
- Ability to interpret archaeological findings and provide compliance recommendations.
- Experience reviewing archaeological monitoring reports and environmental documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and document management systems.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
