Job Summary
Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) is a two‑year institution serving the communities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City and York counties. The Department of Police, Safety, and Security cultivates a safe campus environment, deters crime, promotes positive relationships, and serves students, staff, faculty, and the community.
As a campus Police Officer, you will uphold and enforce the laws of Virginia and the rules and regulations of VPCC, protect faculty, staff, students, guests, and property, and create a secure environment. The Officer is designated as a Campus Security Authority (Clery Act) and Responsible Employee (Title IX). Responsibilities include responding to calls, performing traffic and crowd control, conducting investigations, preparing reports, providing first aid, managing security checks and building inspections, and handling communications and dispatch duties.
Responsibilities- Respond to routine, non‑emergency and emergency calls, providing first aid and/or CPR as needed.
- Investigate crime‑related offenses, traffic accidents, thefts, and other incidents, submit written reports, and preserve evidence.
- Conduct traffic and crowd control on campus property and adjacent city or county streets; authorize traffic and conduct vehicle investigations.
- Maintain security checks, building inspections, and escort services; unlock and secure doors and patrol parking lots and roadways.
- Operate communication equipment, perform dispatch duties, issue parking permits, and assist with special assignments.
- Transport suspects to magistrate, acquire warrants, and transport individuals needing crisis intervention for behavioral health assessment.
- Assist the agency or state government during emergencies declared by the Governor.
- Unincumbent, unexpired Virginia (DCJS) law enforcement officer certification as a sworn police officer; meet all training and certification requirements.
- Ability to work an irregular schedule, varied conditions, and at all VPCC campuses and sites.
- Knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia laws, VPCC regulations, Title IX, Clery Act, campus threat assessment principles, firearms safety, and security concepts.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; sound judgment, effective decision‑making, conflict resolution, and problem‑solving skills.
- Physical ability to meet job demands; ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Experience in an educational setting.
- Previous experience in a college, military, or municipal police department.
- Current or former DCJS General and/or Special Instructor Certification.
Selected candidates must complete a criminal background check (fingerprint, local agency, employment, education, credit) and may be required to complete the Commonwealth’s Statement of Economic Interest.
