Police Officer - Retiree Part-Time

The City of Richmond Police Department is accepting applications for a Police Officer – Retiree Part-Time position.

Requirements

Must have retired from RPD.

Retirement must have been in the last 5 years or still hold a current DCJS certification.

If still employed with RPD, must complete the DROP program before being eligible (if the DROP was not completed, you must be separated from the city for a period of no less than 12 months).

Must be separated from the department for at least one pay cycle and can apply after 30 days.

Weekly Hours Permitted

29-32 hours per week. Overtime must be avoided; if over 29 hours a week it will be paid, otherwise the employee may be removed from the program. Re‑hired part‑time employees can lose pension benefits if they work a full‑time schedule.

Benefits

Monthly retirement/pension benefits will continue.

No recalculation of benefits.

You will not earn additional retirement benefits during your re‑employment period. Upon rehire, you are eligible for the same employee benefits as any other part‑time permanent position.

Permanent part‑time employees who work 25 or more hours per week are eligible to participate in medical and dental benefits, and the Deferred Compensation 457 Plan.

Upon rehire, you are eligible to earn vacation and sick time on a pro‑rata basis based on your hours. Your accrued time off will begin with 0 hours and your crediting rate to earn time off will be the same as a new employee.

Precinct Walking Assignments
Assignments can be offered on a case‑by‑case basis.

Work schedule can vary depending on the assignment. Dayshift only and weekdays only are not guaranteed.

Successful completion of an interview, thorough background investigation (including a polygraph exam), physical and drug/alcohol screening is required. The Police Department background process may take up to 60‑90 days. An applicant disqualified from the background process may reapply a year after disqualification.

Training Requirements

Re‑hired employees will complete Reentry or a modified Basic Training Class with the Training Academy prior to assignment.

40 hours of in‑service training, 4 weeks of field training, and any relevant or missing re‑entry training. Upon successful completion, the officer must maintain all applicable RPD and DCJS mandated training and certifications.

Physical and Dexterity Requirements

Requires medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Environmental Hazards

The job may expose the employee to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, heights, disease/pathogens, explosives, and violence.

Sensory Requirements

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
