Responsibilities
- Operate diesel or gasoline powered engineering equipment with wheeled or crawler traction for general construction and maintenance activities.
- Operate road grader, backhoe, front‑end loader, road roller, bulldozer, and large industrial tractors to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to fine specification.
- Grade surfaces, compact soil, or roll to specifications on flat or rolling terrain.
- Perform tasks such as cutting grass, patching cracks in pavements, digging ditches, spreading sand and gravel, removing tree limbs and fallen trees, picking up trash and debris, breaking up pavement, spraying, spreading top soil and fertilizers.
- Possess a valid government driver’s CDL license (Class A or
B).
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Tour of Duty:
Set schedule (Monday‑Friday 0600‑1430). - Security Requirements:
Non‑Sensitive. - Appointment subject to a favorable suitability or fitness determination; unfavorable background checks will be grounds for removal.
- Fair Labor Standards Act:
Non‑Exempt. - Selective Service Requirement:
Males born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered or exempt. - Bargaining Unit Status:

Must possess a valid government driver’s CDL license (Class A or
B). - Real other acceptable identification documents required to access certain federal facilities.
Applicants will be evaluated against the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. They must demonstrate the ability to perform the common tasks of the job, including operating heavy equipment, excavation, grading, and maintenance activities. The SOE for this position is the ability to work as an Engineering Equipment Operator with minimal supervision.
Physical EffortHeavy and strenuous physical effort is required, including constant reaching, bending, and movement of hands, arms, feet, and legs. The operator must be capable of wearing all required safety equipment and lifting up to 100 pounds, with a normal maximum of 50 pounds.
Working ConditionsOperators work in all types of weather and conditions. Tasks are performed in open driver's seats or platforms, on slopes, grades, and rolling surfaces. Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, cold, insect stings, and fumes from engines and exhaust is common.
