Overview
Diesel Mechanic — Pay: $28.00 - $39.00 per hour
Ruston Paving is a commercial and industrial paving construction contractor with offices in New York, Virginia, and North Carolina. Established in 1943, we are a family-oriented company that has been in business for three generations. Our company is capable of all types of asphalt paving projects ranging from minor repairs to larger projects incorporating asphalt reclamation and recycling, as well as new construction.
Responsibilities- Maintains, repairs, and occasionally operates construction or power equipment, including but not limited to an excavator, grader, bulldozer, backhoe, front end loader, skid steer, asphalt paver, dirt/asphalt roller, asphalt reclaimer, soil stabilizer, and asphalt milling machine.
- Maintains, repairs, and occasionally operates jackhammers, saws, and other small equipment and tools as required.
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots equipment failures and repairs and maintains diesel and gasoline engines.
- Performs shop management functions such as maintenance scheduling and spare parts inventory control.
- Cleans equipment as needed to aid in diagnostic evaluation and repairs.
- Maintains and oversees on-site stock for routine maintenance and repair of fleet equipment, trucks and vehicles, including fuel, grease, oil, fluids, filters, and small wear parts.
- Operates small electric and air powered hand tools (e.g., welders, cut-off saws, drill presses, jacks, chain hoists, overhead cranes, vehicle lifts, grease guns, bench grinders, pressure washers, presses, torches).
- Travels to remote locations or job sites as needed for emergency repair and maintenance of fleet equipment, trucks, and vehicles.
- Follows all safety requirements and procedures outlined by regulatory agencies and company policies.
- Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles, equipment, and trailers; notes defects or deficiencies in writing and verbally.
- All other duties as assigned.

- Ability to work independently and follow written and oral instructions; strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies used in construction work; familiarity with heavy site construction equipment operation, maintenance, capability, use, and function.
- General knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions; ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to use equipment and tools safely;
Ruston Paving does not tolerate shortcuts in safety. - Ability to operate and problem-solve with computers for electronic work orders.
- Welding capabilities: MIG, TIG, and stick weld.
- Working knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems; ability to work in adverse field and weather conditions.
- Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work described.
- Valid in-state driver’s license (or ability to obtain); CDL preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with heavy construction equipment repair and maintenance.
- Site excavation and/or paving experience preferred.
- We provide double time pay for weekend work.
- Mechanics should possess or be in the process of acquiring basic tools for the trade (including ¾” drive and under). A tool allowance is provided.
- Shifts start and end at the local division office/shop; transportation to and from the job site is provided.
- Uniforms and personal protective equipment are provided and must be worn in accordance with company policy.
- Projects may require out-of-town overnight stays occasionally.
- Employees may be assigned to other facility locations or operations as required.
