Plumber

The Plumber performs plumbing and maintenance work at school buildings and facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs skilled maintenance, repairs, modifications, and installations of plumbing fixtures in school buildings and facilities.
  • Performs work under general supervision.
  • Prepares appropriate reports and maintains records and files.
  • Installs and repairs hot and cold water, oil, steam, or gas pipes, and all necessary connections; and any surrounding sheet metal requiring replacement.
  • Makes sketches for plumbing layouts and determines types and quantities of materials necessary.
  • Determines time and cost estimates for plumbing jobs and aids in obtaining materials necessary to complete the job.
  • Assists coworkers with difficult and complex projects and skilled workers of related trades in general plumbing maintenance work.
  • Maintains plumbing tools and equipment in good working condition and performs related tasks as required.
  • Performs related plumbing tasks, including clearing stoppages (e.g., unclogging drains and fixtures) and servicing flush systems.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs water-related equipment and fixtures, including water coolers, sinks, kitchen equipment, and other systems requiring water connections, ensuring proper functionality and compliance with operational standards.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of experience at a journeyman level in plumbing.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must hold a Journeyman Plumber's License.
  • Current certificate as a tester of backflow prevention devices preferred.
  • Must have a valid Virginia driver's license with a good driving record.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be flexible to work after hours and weekends. Overtime may be required.
  • A performance test may be required to demonstrate the required skill level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures in school buildings and facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of the terminology, materials, and methods used in plumbing and sheet metal maintenance.
  • Good knowledge of the plumbing occupational hazards and required safety precautions and some knowledge of air conditioning and cafeteria equipment.
  • Good communication, organizational, and planning skills.
  • Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and machinery required in plumbing and working from instructions, sketches, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Ability to work with supervisors, managers, and school/department administration and staff.
  • Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs. frequently and 50-75 lbs. occasionally for short distances or with the aid of load-bearing equipment.
  • Ability to perform all required tasks of lifting, stooping, bending, and carrying plumbing equipment and materials to and from work sites.
  • Proficient in digital work order systems (e.g., FMX) to receive, track, and close maintenance requests.

Physical Demands:

Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. The position requires sufficient strength, coordination, and dexterity to perform tasks such as lifting, stooping, bending, reaching, and carrying plumbing tools, equipment, and materials to and from work sites. Work involves frequent standing, walking, talking, and hearing, as well as the use of hands to handle tools and operate machinery.

Visual acuity is required for depth and color perception, close inspection of small components, reading gauges or plans, and monitoring worksite conditions and activities with accuracy.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric elements. The employee may come into contact with oils, chemicals, or other hazardous materials and may be required to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment. Work sites may present physical risks associated with plumbing systems, mechanical equipment, or confined spaces.

The position may involve exposure to blood-borne pathogens and requires adherence to safety and sanitation protocols. Tasks are performed independently and in coordination with maintenance teams under standard safety procedures and established schedules.
