Overview

The primary responsibility of the Welding Mechanic is the laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing, and welding of piping and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, and industrial processing systems. The Mechanic typically reports to the trade Supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Select type and size of pipe and related materials according to job specifications.
  • Cut pipe using appropriate tools (pipe cutters, port‑a‑band saw, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, pipe cutting machine) and thread pipe using a threading machine.
  • Assemble and install a variety of metal and non‑metal pipe and fittings, including brass, copper, glass, and plastic.
  • Join piping by proper means (welded, grooved, threaded, soldered, brazed, fused).
  • Perform welding of pipes/metals with various techniques (electric, gas, arc, MIG, TIG).
  • Test piping systems for leaks and observe gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks.
  • Teach and coach apprentices and helpers, providing direction to work safely, deliver quality, and maintain productivity.
  • Secure pipes to structure with clamps, brackets, and hangers using hand tools.
  • Weld holding fixtures to structural steel members when necessary.
  • Determine required equipment and welding method by applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of BOCA and OSHA safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of the properties of various welding rods and fluxes used in welding.
  • Ability to obtain AWS 6G certification.
  • Ability to pass Colonial Webb weld test.
  • Ability to work from drawings, submittals, and specifications.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills across trades.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Capacity to work independently without direct supervision.
