Job Description Commercial HVAC Installation & Commissioning Technician

Location: Richmond, VA

Job Type: Full-Time

Pay Range: $30.00-$40.00 (DOE)

Are you an experienced Commercial HVAC Technician looking for a role that combines installation, startup, commissioning, and advanced system troubleshooting? We're seeking a skilled Commercial HVAC Installation & Commissioning Technician to install, replace, commission, and service commercial HVAC systems while ensuring every project is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

What You'll Do Installation & Replacement
  • Install, replace, and retrofit commercial HVAC equipment and associated control systems.
  • Install equipment including:
    • DX systems (up to 50 tons)
    • Water-source heat pumps
    • Fan coil units
    • Unit heaters
    • Ductless split systems
    • Associated HVAC accessories
  • Perform tenant improvement work including:
    • Ductwork installation and modifications
    • Thermostat relocations
    • Equipment replacements
    • Mechanical system alterations
Startup & Commissioning
  • Perform equipment startups and operational testing.
  • Verify proper system operation and performance.
  • Troubleshoot startup issues and complete necessary adjustments or repairs.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities to ensure systems operate according to design specifications.
  • Provide system training to building owners, facility personnel, and apprentices.
Service & Customer Support
  • Diagnose equipment failures and perform repairs on commercial HVAC systems.
  • Complete work orders accurately and on schedule.
  • Communicate job status and updates with dispatch and supervisors throughout the workday.
  • Maintain positive customer relationships through professional communication and technical expertise.
Leadership & Team Support
  • Oversee and mentor apprentices and helpers.
  • Coordinate multiple assignments while maintaining quality and productivity.
  • Attend project meetings, safety meetings, and technical training sessions.
  • Support continuous improvement through coaching and technical leadership.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Maintain truck inventory and necessary job materials.
  • Obtain purchase orders and make approved field purchases.
  • Complete all required documentation, including:
    • Work orders
    • Startup reports
    • Inspection reports
    • Customer-required documentation
    • Mobile service applications
  • Keep company vehicles, tools, and equipment clean and organized.
Qualifications Required
  • Commercial HVAC installation and/or commissioning experience
  • EPA Universal (CFC) Certification
  • HVAC Journeyman License (Master License preferred)
  • Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings
  • Knowledge of BOCA Building Codes and OSHA safety regulations
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Strong communication and customer service abilities
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
Preferred
  • 3+ years of commercial HVAC installation or service experience
  • Startup and commissioning experience
  • Experience leading apprentices or installation crews
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial control systems
