Overview

Drill-Tech is seeking an experienced CDL-A Driver / Crew Member to transport heavy construction equipment, materials, and tooling while supporting horizontal directional drilling (HDD) crews throughout Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware.

Headquartered in Chester, Maryland, Drill-Tech performs HDD and underground utility work throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

This is a hands-on, dual-role position. Approximately 60-70% of the role involves driving, hauling, loading, securing, and relocating heavy equipment between Drill-Tech's yard and active jobsites. The remaining 30-40% involves working alongside HDD crews in the field.

Responsibilities
  • Transport HDD rigs, excavators, mini excavators, skid steers, vacuum excavation equipment, mud systems, generators, water tanks, trailers, tooling, and other construction equipment
  • Load, secure, transport, and unload heavy equipment using lowboy, tag, tilt-deck, equipment, and dump trailers
  • Properly chain, bind, block, and secure loads in accordance with DOT and FMCSA requirements
  • Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report vehicle or equipment issues
  • Maintain accurate ELD logs, DVIRs, permits, delivery tickets, fuel receipts, and other required documentation
  • Verify load height, width, length, and weight before transport
  • Follow applicable oversize and overweight permits, approved routes, travel restrictions, and escort requirements
  • Deliver drill rod, tooling, reamers, drilling fluids, pipe, conduit, fuel, water, parts, and other materials to active crews
  • Relocate equipment between jobsites and crews as project needs change
  • Maintain assigned trucks and trailers in clean, safe, and serviceable condition
  • Assist HDD crews with jobsite setup and breakdown, drill rod and tooling, drilling fluids, excavation, potholing, and product installation
  • Assist with loading and racking drill rod, changing bits and reamers, and spotting equipment during moves and setup
  • Follow all company, DOT, OSHA, customer, and jobsite safety requirements
  • Work closely with drill operators, locators, equipment operators, laborers, and other crew members
Qualifications
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) with air brake qualification
  • Minimum of 2 years of verifiable experience hauling heavy construction equipment using lowboy, tag, or equipment trailers
  • Experience safely loading, unloading, chaining, binding, and securing heavy equipment
  • Clean and acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Current DOT medical certification or ability to obtain prior to starting
  • Ability to meet DOT/FMCSA drug and alcohol testing requirements, including FMCSA Clearinghouse requirements
  • Ability and willingness to perform hands‑on construction work when not driving
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions
  • Willingness to work extended hours, occasional Saturdays, and occasional overnight travel
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to safe operations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous horizontal directional drilling, underground utility, or heavy civil construction experience
  • Tanker (N) and/or Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement
  • Experience transporting or working around Vermeer, Ditch Witch, American Augers, or similar HDD equipment
  • Experience with vacuum excavation equipment
  • Experience operating excavators, mini excavators, skid steers, or other construction equipment
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
  • Flagger or maintenance‑of‑traffic certification
  • Excavation and trenching Competent Person training
  • Forklift, telehandler, crane, rigging, or signal person qualifications
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and experience with equipment inspections or field maintenance
