Description

The maximum hiring compensation for this position is to not exceed an hourly rate of $33.00/hour.

The City of Richmond Department of Planning & Development Review is currently looking for an experienced Fire Alarm/Sprinkler Inspector (Code Enforcement) to inspect Fire Protection Systems, which include new and existing Fire Alarm, Sprinkler installations in residence, business, public, and other buildings for conformance with safety standards, laws, ordinances, safety and zoning codes; plan specifications; and Uniform Construction Code.

Duties include but are not limited to
  • Demonstrating considerable technical knowledge of requirements, regulations, and practices related to high rise and industrial building construction
  • Inspecting large and complex projects such as high-rise buildings, industrial complexes, places of assembly and unusually complex structures
  • Providing customer service contact with builders, owners and contractors to determine whether the requirements of the various codes are met
  • Reading and understanding construction technical drawings and performing work of moderate physical activity at outdoor construction sites.

This position is considered an Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather. This individual may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays or on-call, as needed.

Qualifications, Special Certifications And Licenses KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of City Ordinances relating to Fire Alarm, Sprinkler and Mechanical Hood Fire Suppression installations.
  • Knowledge of the Virginia Construction Code standards, knowledge of methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, maintaining and operating a variety of Fire Alarm, sprinkler and Mechanical Hood Fire Suppression installations and associated equipment.
  • Ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, government officials and the general public.
Minimum Training And Experience
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Three years of experience in area of assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
Preferred Training And Experience
  • A State certification in Fire Protection General is a plus;
  • A State certification in Mechanical General is a plus;
  • Experience performing Fire Alarm, sprinkler and Mechanical inspections for state or local government is a plus;
  • Bilingual is a plus.
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, And/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • Completion of a Commercial Code Inspection certification in area of assignment within one year of hire date
  • Certification may include one of the following Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development certifications:
    Building General Inspector, Mechanical General and Fire Protection General Inspector.
