The Virginia Department of Elections (ELECT) is seeking a highly skilled Technical Writer with proven experience in developing clear, concise, user-friendly documentation for complex technical products. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that complex technical information is communicated clearly and effectively to internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to develop documentation for a cloud-based software development project with the initial phase currently in progress.
This engagement will require writing a style guide for a software development project. Applicants are required to submit a Technical writing sample with their application, preferably a style guide or similar product. Applications that do not include a writing sample will not be considered.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Translate complex concepts into clear, concise and accessible language for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Manage multiple documentation projects and meet established deadlines.
- Collaborate with developers, product managers, and subject matter experts to provide a written product for technical and non-technical audiences in support of an Agile development team, to include but not limited to user guides, API documents, and release notes.
- Maintain strong version control and documentation review practices.
- Ensure documentation complies with agency standards, accessibility requirements, and formatting guidelines.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Computer Science, or a related field. (Required)
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in technical writing, preferably in a government or technology environment. (Required)
- Expert in the use of MS Word, Google Docs, Confluence, or similar tools. (Required)
- Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat, SnagIT, or similar tools for visuals. (Required)
- Experience with Git or other version control systems at contributor or read-only level and documentation platforms such as Git Book. (Required)
- Understanding of Scrum/Agile methodology. (Required)
- Familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, and software architecture concepts. (Required)
- Ability to read code snippets. (Required)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, clarity and attention to detail in written products. (Required)
- Experience creating, editing, and maintaining technical documentation including manuals, user guides, standard operating procedure, etc. (Required)
- Ability to interview subject matter experts (SMEs) and distill complex information. (Required)
- Experience with government documentation and standards and accessibility compliance. (Highly desired)
- Familiarity with diagramming tools (Lucidchart, Draw.io, etc.). (Highly desired)
- Basic knowledge of programming languages or IT systems. (Highly desired)
- Experience with UX writing. (Highly desired)
- Knowledge of programming languages, such as Markdown and HTML/CSS. (Highly desired)
- Experience writing for software products (SaaS, desktop, or mobile). (Highly desired)
