Position Title
Principal Data Engineer – Life, Annuity, and Long‑Term Care Data Solutions team
LocationVirginia (Richmond or Lynchburg). Hybrid (in‑office) or remote applicants located in eligible Eastern or Central Standard Time states.
About the RoleLead and mentor data engineering tech leads across 3–4 build teams using Databricks within a Center of Excellence. Provide technical direction, coaching, and governance for the full software development lifecycle—including design, build, test, and run. Drive the definition of best practices, establish common code frameworks, and elevate engineering maturity. Oversee the implementation of Databricks to replace legacy analytical platforms, ensuring high‑quality data products and analytical solutions.
- Lead and mentor technical teams, providing guidance on design, implementation, and best practices.
- Define and enforce coding standards, design reviews, and code reviews.
- Lead CI/CD and design reusable data tests for future releases.
- Drive Spark performance optimization and platform cost optimization.
- Manage production monitoring, troubleshoot, and defect resolution.
- Expand expertise into AI, ML, Lakebase, and other Databricks capabilities as needed.
- Work closely with solution architects, agile tech leads, data product owners, and partners across security, cloud, testing, and data modeling.
- 3–5 years of hands‑on Databricks experience with complementary technologies (data governance, reporting, dashboards, source systems).
- Proven experience in a Tech Lead role, including leading developers and distributing work.
- Strong communication skills and ability to mentor, influence, and align cross‑functional stakeholders.
- Ability to engage proactively with business leaders to recommend solutions aligned to strategy.
- Solid grounding in analytics, data warehousing, and modern data‑engineering practices.
- Experience working in Agile frameworks and writing high‑quality user stories.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and provide clarity for teams and partners.
- Azure and Fabric cloud experience.
- Insurance industry business process and data knowledge.
- Medical data experience.
- Familiarity with data governance and data quality needs for business consumers.
- Competitive base salary ($120,000 – $195,000) with incentive plan (target 15% of base).
