The Applications & Analytics Team (A&A), a division of School of Medicine Technology Services (SOMTech), supports all aspects of the mission of the School of Medicine and certain overlapping functions of partner institutions including VCU Health System and MCV Physicians by designing, developing, and maintaining web applications and data services that provide critical support for education, research, clinical operations, and administration.

As part of this team, the Software Engineer plays a key role in delivering secure, scalable, and maintainable software solutions that support the needs of faculty, staff, students, and healthcare partners.

A central responsibility of this role is designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting enterprise applications throughout the software development lifecycle. The Software Engineer will collaborate closely with business analysts, product owners, quality assurance analysts, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions, implement new features, troubleshoot issues, and enhance existing systems. This position will contribute to application architecture, code reviews, technical documentation, and continuous improvement efforts to ensure solutions meet established standards for quality, performance, security, and reliability.

The Software Engineer reports to the Assistant Director for Application Development and works across a varied portfolio of applications supporting the education, research, and clinical missions of the School of Medicine, MCV Physicians, and the VCU Health System. Through technical expertise, innovation, and collaboration, this role contributes to the successful delivery and ongoing support of technology solutions that advance the strategic objectives of the institution.

This position is based on our Richmond, Virginia campus. While we offer hybrid work arrangements, candidates must reside in Virginia or be willing to relocate to Virginia prior to their start date at their own expense. Given the highly collaborative nature of our work and our close partnership with faculty, clinicians, researchers, and administrative leaders, periodic on-site presence is required. We are particularly interested in candidates who are passionate about leveraging technology to advance medical education, research, and healthcare operations.

• Participate in the end to end life cycle of custom software application development and data integration with other systems, including analyzing, building, testing and deploying.
• Support a broad portfolio of administrative, educational, business intelligence, financial and educational systems for the School of Medicine, MCV Physicians, and the VCU Health Science campus.
• Utilize a range of front end and back end programing languages and technologies including .NET, C#, JavaScript and JavaScript frameworks and T-SQL, as well as ability to adapt to new technologies.
• Collaborate with team members, product owners and stakeholders in an agile development environment.

• Develop web applications utilizing current Microsoft .NET LTS ecosystem, .NET Web API, ASP.NET MVC, Vue.js and JavaScript/jQuery.
• Leverage AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Git Hub Copilot) to accelerate development workflows, optimize efficiency, and maintain high code quality.
• Develop jobs and services using T-SQL and C#/.NET.
• Develop Extract Transform Load (ETL) mappings, stored procedures, universes, queries, reports, dashboards, and analytical applications.
• Build and deploy code using Azure Dev Ops pipelines.
• Participate in a scrum-based agile development process.
• Maintain and enhance existing software systems to meet current and future user needs.
• Troubleshoot and resolve software defects and issues.
• Participate in code reviews and provide and receive constructive feedback to team members.
