Rail Safety Inspector
Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000. Starting Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience.
The State Corporation Commission (SCC) Division of Utility and Railroad Safety seeks a motivated and public service-oriented Rail Safety Inspector to join its mission-driven team. Working closely with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), SCC rail inspectors conduct inspections of railroad facilities to ensure safe operation of jurisdictional railroads within Virginia. The candidate selected for this position will conduct Motive Power and Equipment (MP&E) inspections primarily in the Northern Virginia area to determine compliance with the applicable rail safety laws, rules, standards, and orders.
This position offers on-the-job training using FRA Safety Standards and a Monday-through-Thursday, 40-hour work week schedule with occasional on-call work outside of normal working hours.
Responsibilities- Independently conduct MP&E inspections across Virginia while accurately and consistently applying the laws, rules, and standards.
- Thoroughly investigate rail complaints received from the general public and others.
- Conduct investigations of reportable incidents (including accidents and derailments) occurring on the railroad lines; determine probable cause of incidents and whether non-compliance of laws, rules and standards contributed to the incidents.
- Prepare written reports in accordance with applicable policies and guidelines and submit reports to supervisor and the FRA within required timelines.
- Frequently travel in Virginia (primarily in Northern Virginia and occasionally to Eastern Virginia) and traverse rough terrain to conduct inspections of locomotives, freight and passenger cars, rolling stock, and related safety systems.
