Job Summary
Local P&D or City Drivers operate various tractor‑trailer combinations between company service centers and customer facilities or work sites within the service center's geographic area. They sort, handle, load, and/or unload freight at company and customer locations.
Primary Responsibilities- Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials.
- Meet or exceed medical standards of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation and pass a drug and alcohol test.
- Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manual methods in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines.
- Apply various loading techniques such as tight loading or cross loading to secure freight; use appropriate tools and supplies (pallets, straps, rope).
- Transport freight continuously throughout the service center on non‑forgiving surfaces.
- Utilize Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations.
- Read and interpret shipping labels and complete freight movement forms (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage reports, exception forms).
- Hand‑load, rewrap, or stack freight as necessary and ensure proper quality loading of all trailers.
- Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel; work in a fast‑pace, deadline‑oriented environment.
- Be available for work to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- Perform additional duties as assigned; this list is not all-inclusive.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Must read, write, speak English and perform basic math calculations.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements.
- Acceptable motor vehicle record and 12 months of tractor‑trailer driving experience, or completion of an approved driving school or Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program.
- Ability to operate handheld tablets and follow instructions via two‑way radio or phone.
- Working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems and DOT regulations for hazardous materials.
- Passable medical standards and satisfactory drug and alcohol tests.
- Complete orientation/training program under an Old Dominion qualified driver trainer.
- Minimum age 22 years.
Work requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and lifting. Freight may weigh up to 50,000 pounds in full trailers. Frequent pushing/pulling and carrying of freight up to 500 pounds, as well as repetitive squatting, crouching, and manual handling of loads, are required. Driver must be able to place hands on steering wheel, operate manual transmission, and execute cognitive tasks such as navigation, reading manifests, and monitoring traffic.
WorkEnvironment
Employees work in varied settings, including enclosed vehicle interiors, trailers, and on uneven surfaces in all weather conditions. Noise levels vary, and lighting conditions may range from bright to low. Exposure to freight handling and loading operations is present.
CompensationSalary range: $20.15–$36.35 per hour. Actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, experience, market conditions, and company requirements. The position includes a tuition reimbursement program for new graduates of an approved trucking school.
