Job Description

JOB STATUS: CONTINUOUS

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions; some knowledge of city streets and traffic regulations.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • No felony conviction charge.
  • No more than two moving violations in the last 12 months.
  • Zero driving points or above.
  • Not assigned by a judge to a driving improvement clinic.
  • Bilingual skills to include Spanish are a plus.
  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) must be obtained prior to becoming a substitute bus operator.
  • Special

    Note:

    RPS has training to assist with obtaining a Commercial Driver's License. CDL Learner's Permit must be obtained prior to training.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Drives a school bus; picks up and delivers students to and from school, field trips, and special events.
  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections according to Virginia Department of Education (8

    VAC
    20 – 70-380) guidelines.
  • Maintains safety equipment; reports unsafe bus conditions.
  • Adheres to preventive maintenance schedule.
  • Completes required forms and reports accurately and timely.
  • Adheres to safety rules, motor regulations, and laws; attends all scheduled meetings.
  • Loads bus according to established procedures; follows designated route schedule and stops at authorized stops only.
  • Notifies proper authorities of bus breakdown or schedule deviations; ensures all pupils are accounted for and all runs are covered.
  • Reports all operating and equipment deficiencies; washes and cleans the bus; fuels bus as required.
  • Obeys all traffic laws and mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations; transports only authorized students.
  • Reports all accidents and completes required reports; conducts periodic emergency bus evacuation drills.
  • Provides excellent customer service to students and staff; maintains passenger safety and discipline.
  • Makes bus available for periodic maintenance; performs related tasks as required.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

  • Transports pupils to and from school and special events; performs related work as required.
  • Work is performed under regular supervision.
  • Shall have no limitations that interfere with the ability to control and drive a school bus.
  • Occasional operation of vehicles during inclement weather is required.

REPORTS TO: Assigned Transportation Supervisor

HOURS OF OPERATION: 6:00-6:30 am to 9:00-9:30 am and 1:30-2:00 to 4:30-5:00 pm

OTHER INFORMATION: Information needed to prepare for CDL Instructor Permit:

  • Go to DMV and get the CDL manual
  • Study to obtain the Class “B” license (and related sections in the CDL Manual)
  • The four tests required:
    General knowledge, Air Brake, Transporting Passengers, School Bus
