Research Scientist, Immunology Research
A key scientific staff member of the Oncology Pharmacology and Disease Models group at Boehringer Ingelheim’s US research facility in Ridgefield, CT, the successful candidate will bring expertise in solid-tumor models, immune profiling, conventional and spectral flowcytometry, translational biomarkers, and evaluation of small- and large-molecule therapeutics. This role requires scientific independence, strong organization, active bench engagement, and the ability to lead and develop others in a multidisciplinary environment.
As an employee of Boehringer Ingelheim, you will actively contribute to the discovery, development, and delivery of our products to our patients and customers. Our global presence provides an opportunity for all employees to collaborate internationally, offering visibility and the opportunity to directly contribute to the company's success. We realize that our strength and competitive advantage lie with our people. We support our employees in several ways to foster a healthy working environment, meaningful work, mobility, networking, and work-life balance.
Our competitive compensation and benefit programs reflect Boehringer Ingelheim's high regard for our employees.
- Independently design, execute, analyze, and interpret oncology pharmacology studies supporting target validation, lead optimization, efficacy, mechanism of action, biomarkers, and program decisions.
- Develop and apply spontaneous and transplantable tumor models, including colorectal, lung, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, and breast cancer, to evaluate small- and large-molecule therapies as monotherapies and combinations.
- Harvest and process tumors and lymphoid tissues, including dissociation, cell isolation, cryopreservation, and preparation of high-quality single-cell suspensions.
- Design, validate, and execute multicolor conventional and spectral flowcytometry panels and reproducible analysis workflows for immunophenotyping, target engagement, pharmacodynamics, and characterization of tumor-infiltrating immune cells; troubleshoot reagents, panels, and sample quality.
- Measure soluble biomarkers and cytokines using MSD, ELISA, AlphaLISA, and related platforms, and integrate efficacy, flowcytometry, cellular, and biomarker data into clear conclusions and actionable recommendations.
- Maintain accurate experimental records, protocols, reports, data packages, and presentations, and communicate results and strategy clearly to project teams and leadership.
- Collaborate across discovery biology, pharmacology, translational science, biomarkers, bioinformatics, pathology, chemistry, biologics, and project teams; contribute to portfolio decisions and represent the function in cross-functional forums.
- Manage CRO partnerships end to end, including vendor selection, scopes of work, study oversight, timelines, budgets, data quality, issue resolution, and decision-ready reporting.
- Manage and mentor scientists and research associates by setting priorities, allocating work, providing technical guidance, and reinforcing scientific rigor and accountability.
- Promote a collegial, inclusive, safe, and solutions-oriented laboratory culture.
- PhD, D.V.M./V.M.D, in Immunology, Cancer Biology, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, or a related discipline, with relevant postdoctoral and/or pharmaceutical or biotechnology research experience ORMasters degree in a relevant scientific discipline with six-plus (6+) years of related experience.
- Strong knowledge of tumor immunology, innate and adaptive immune-cell biology, tumor–immune interactions, and the tumor microenvironment.
- Demonstrated hands-on expertise in conventional and spectral flowcytometry, including high-parameter panel design, optimization, acquisition, high-dimensional analysis with advanced software, tumor (tissue) dissociation, and immunophenotyping of tumor-infiltrating lymphoid and myeloid populations.
- Proven experience conducting in vivo oncology studies in one or more relevant tumor types, preferably colorectal, lung, pancreatic, or breast cancer, and evaluating both small- and large-molecule therapies.
- Experience using MSD, ELISA, AlphaLISA, or comparable bioanalytical platforms.
- Experience establishing and applying patient-derived xenograft (PDX) and cell line-derived xenograft (CDX) models for oncology efficacy, pharmacology, and translational studies.
- Experience with oncology-relevant New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), including ex vivo dissociated tumor-cell (DTC)…
