GENERAL SUMMARY

The Crossing Guard/Campus Safety Monitor is responsible for promoting the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and school property. During designated arrival and dismissal periods, the employee assists students and pedestrians in safely crossing streets and monitors vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Before and after designated crossing guard hours, the employee monitors school hallways, building perimeters, parking lots, and other assigned areas to help maintain a safe, orderly, and secure school environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned.)

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Safely assist students and pedestrians in crossing streets at designated school crossing locations.

Monitor vehicular and pedestrian traffic during student arrival and dismissal.

Stop or direct traffic, as appropriate and consistent with training and established procedures, to facilitate safe pedestrian crossings.

Promote safe pedestrian behaviors and reinforce established school safety procedures.

Monitor school hallways throughout the school day to support a safe and orderly environment.

Monitor the interior and exterior perimeters of assigned school buildings for safety concerns, unauthorized individuals, or unusual activity.

Conduct routine monitoring of school parking lots and other assigned exterior areas.

Maintain a visible presence throughout assigned areas to support student safety and appropriate behavior.

Assist with monitoring student movement during class transitions and other high-traffic periods.

Observe and promptly report suspicious activity, unauthorized visitors, safety hazards, accidents, or other concerns to the appropriate school administrator and/or Administrator of Safety and Crisis Management.

Assist school administration with maintaining safe and orderly conditions during arrival, dismissal, transitions, and other designated activities.

Follow established District procedures when responding to safety concerns or emergency situations.

Communicate professionally with students, employees, parents, visitors, law enforcement, and members of the community.

Wear all required safety equipment while performing crossing guard and traffic-related duties.

Attend required safety meetings, training sessions, and professional development.

Comply with all Jasper County School District policies, procedures, and applicable laws.

Perform other duties related to student and campus safety as assigned by the Administrator of Safety and Crisis Management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of basic pedestrian, traffic, and school safety practices.

Ability to effectively monitor students and assigned areas.

Ability to recognize and promptly report potential safety and security concerns.

Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, visitors, and members of the public.

Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm during emergency or stressful situations.

Ability to follow established safety and emergency procedures.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Must be dependable, punctual, observant, and safety-conscious.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Experience

Experience working with children, schools, public safety, security, traffic control, or a related area preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

Successful completion of all District-required training and criminal background screening.

Any additional safety or traffic-control training required by the District.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to:

Stand and walk for extended periods.

Patrol hallways, parking lots, building perimeters, and other assigned areas.

Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

See and hear approaching vehicles, pedestrians, students, and other activity in assigned areas.

Lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
