Overview
The Fiber Design Technician is responsible for supporting the design, documentation, and maintenance of outside plant (OSP) fiber networks. This role performs fiber route analysis, splice design, record keeping, and system updates to support service delivery, construction, and maintenance activities. The Fiber Design Technician works closely with engineering, construction, splicing, and operations teams to ensure accurate and timely network designs while maintaining high data integrity in system‑of‑record tools.
EssentialDuties And Responsibilities
- Design and document fiber routes, splice layouts, and hand‑hole placement for customer service requests, network expansion, and maintenance activities in several systems.
- Create, update, and maintain fiber splice records, FDP port assignments, and fiber utilization documentation in approved systems.
- Support OSP planning and engineering activities, including research of existing network assets, route feasibility, and fiber availability.
- Review construction drawings and as‑built documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with design standards.
- Prepare and maintain design drawings, splice schematics, and associated design documentation.
- Coordinate with construction, splicing, and maintenance teams to resolve design issues and support service‑affecting maintenance events.
- Assist with data validation and cleanup efforts to maintain the integrity of fiber records.
- Respond to operational requests under normal and time‑sensitive conditions while maintaining a positive, team‑oriented approach.
- Work in fast paced production environment with required deadlines.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
- Strong understanding of outside plant fiber network concepts, including fiber routing, splicing, and hand‑hole placement.
- Ability to read and interpret fiber design drawings, permits, construction prints, and as‑built documentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Excel, and Word.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in telecommunications, fiber network design, or outside plant engineering preferred.
- Experience with fiber records systems, GIS platforms, or network design tools (such as ARKIS, Netcracker, Service Now, IQGEO-Network Manager or similar systems) is preferred.
- Work from home role with occasional need to support emergency or service‑affecting maintenance activities.
- May require work under high‑priority or high‑stress operational conditions.
- Standard business hours (Central time) with potential for after‑hours support as needed.
