The Role
We are looking for a Senior Project Engineer to provide comprehensive applications/project engineering support for our distributed energy and microgrid projects. Projects typically include managing DER and microgrid assets such as solar, energy storage, controls, and reciprocating engines. The engineer reports to the VP of Project Engineering and Preconstruction and works a hybrid schedule out of offices in Ridgewood, NJ, NYC, Oakland, CA, or Santa Monica, CA.
Key Responsibilities- Interface with all aspects of the business and customers, utilizing strong technical and communication skills.
- Collaborate with the execution (project management) team to deliver turn‑key solutions within budget and schedule.
- Work with business development, execution, and commercial teams to ensure the microgrid integration is technically correct, practical, and cost‑effective, including working on existing service entrance one‑line drawings or creating new ones.
- Investigate interconnection requirements and modify design concepts applicable to each site.
- Work with switch gear manufacturers and OEMs to develop scalable designs and costing at voltage levels ranging from 23 kV to 208 V.
- Provide significant input to solar, battery, and generator designs to optimize performance, reliability, and sustainability.
- Directly manage engineering consultants in preparing detailed engineering and construction drawings and specifications for 30%, 60%, 90% Issue for Permit and 100% Issue for Construction.
- 7+ years of experience in design and construction of power/generation/renewable energy projects.
- Thorough technical understanding of distributed energy technologies, including solar, battery, and reciprocating engines or turbines.
- Knowledge of rotating power with reciprocating engines in the 200 – 2000 kW range, and experience with grid‑parallel and island‑mode operations.
- Solid understanding of utility interconnection and utility‑side emissions.
- Knowledge of DER power sources and how they interface with the utility to maximize system efficiency.
- Experience in submitting interconnection applications and reviewing utility studies (detailed, facility, or system‑impact studies).
- Excellent communication skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- AutoCAD experience for creating conceptual one‑line diagrams and site layouts.
- BS in Electrical Engineering focused on power; PE license in power or progressing toward it.
- Advanced coursework or higher‑level degree in power preferred.
