What You’ll DoThe Health Information Management (HIM) Care Center Specialist is an experienced health information professional responsible for overseeing and performing advanced HIM functions specifically for the Care Center. This role ensures the accuracy, security, and completeness of health records and coding practices, with a particular emphasis on compliance with AHIMA, HIPAA, and state regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include Care Center specific coding, auditing, record maintenance, health record navigation, and staff training.
While not a formal lead or management role, this position acts as a subject matter expert and mentor within the HIM department, providing technical support and collaborating with other departments to meet operational and revenue cycle goals.
- Code diagnoses, procedures, and services specifically for the Care Center using ICD-10 and other applicable classification systems.
- Monitor accuracy and completeness of medical records to ensure compliance with CMS, AHIMA, and state long-term care standards.
- Review, verify, scan, and index patient documentation into the EHR.
- Maintain and update the Master Patient Index (MPI) to ensure correct patient identification.
- Assign chart deficiencies and resolve documentation discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Conduct periodic audits of Care Center medical records and prepare related reports.
- Analyze data from records to support quality improvement, regulatory reporting, and performance tracking.
- Track daily census and collaborate with Care Center staff on monthly revenue cycle processes, pre-admission insurance verification, and health record retrieval.
- Process requests for protected health information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA and privacy policies.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in Care Center HIM practices, providing mentorship and technical guidance to HIM staff.
- Lead or assist with Care Center-related EHR enhancements and documentation workflow improvements.
- Assist in training new or existing staff on HIM systems, compliance protocols, and Care Center coding practices.
- Ensure proper storage, retrieval, and retention of health records.
- Performs a variety of tasks and other duties as assigned.
- High school graduate or equivalent;
Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred. - Current RHIT certification preferred.
- Eligible for or enrolled in HIT Associate Program to be eligible to sit for the RHIT certification required.
- At least 3 years of directly related experience in an acute care facility or clinic environment in a Health Information Management role.
- Strong experience in Care Center or long-term care coding and documentation compliance.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong experience in the areas of HIPAA and Release of Information.

Compensation may vary outside this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience.
