WSP has a career for an Early Career Geologist for our Rifle, CO office. This person would be involved in projects with our North Mountain Site Investigation and Remediation (NM SIR) Team within the Earth & Environment Division of WSP and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
This person would provide support to technical staff and project managers for due diligence, subsurface investigation, and remediation projects. Tasks may include conducting environmental drilling, collecting environmental samples from various media (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air/vapor), and generating reports for submittal to clients and relevant regulators.
Your Impact- With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, extracting, identifying, and compiling spatial and environmental data from soil sampling, soil gas sampling, groundwater sampling, stormwater sampling, boring logs, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys.
- Review, integrate, collect data, and perform quality control for geologic, hydrogeologic, and other databases.
- Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements and analysis.
- Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and software.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures which include but are not limited to the maintenance of sample collection, laboratory documentation, written procedures, and field/work site logbooks.
- Assist with maintaining and calibrating equipment and tools, troubleshooting or reporting on malfunctions, and performing inventory control activities.
- Perform field work including drill rig geologist, logging drill cuttings, recording drill characteristics.
- Attend to well installation, monitoring, and development, aquifer testing, as well as remediation‑system pilot testing, installation, operation and maintenance.
- Oversee and record data for aquifer testing, and evaluation of data using standard empirical formulas and software (e.g., AQTESOLV).
- Conduct regulatory compliance inspections (stormwater and SPCC).
- Assist technical staff and project managers with environmental risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with low‑level threat mitigation activities and remediation projects.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field/work site notes, and software.
- Assist with safety and work plan preparation and coordination of field work permitting.
- Implement safe work practices in the field in accordance with the HASP.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or a closely related discipline.
- 2 to 4 years of experience working as a Geologist.
- Analytical mindset and experience with geological research techniques required.
- Prior experience with GIS software and Trimble GPS units and ability to use technology for data collection.
- Familiarity with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products, as well as awareness of mitigation programs.
- Highly familiar with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements, especially ECMC regulations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non‑scientific audience.
- Capable self‑leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
