The Idaho Transportation Department is hiring an Engineering Geologist to join our District 6 team located in Rigby, .

The Geologist will provide specialized geologic and geotechnical expertise in support of transportation projects. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and conducting complex surface and subsurface investigations to support construction and maintenance-level projects while ensuring public safety, environmental protection, and long‑term infrastructure performance.

The Professional Geologist works collaboratively across multiple divisions, serving as a technical expert and project manager for geologic investigations, materials sources, and consultant contracts. The position also plays a critical role in identifying geologic hazards, recommending mitigation strategies, and providing construction and maintenance support for geotechnical issues.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct geologic and geotechnical investigations for transportation projects, including field data collection, analysis, and mapping
  • Subsurface investigation including drilling, logging and sampling as well as groundwater levels and inclinometer data collection
  • Review projects to determine the scope of geological and geotechnical investigations and required resources
  • Identify geologic hazards and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies to protect public safety and infrastructure. Typical geological hazards include landslides, rockfall and soft soil
  • Research, evaluate, and manage potential material source sites, including suitability determinations for roadway use
  • Prepare geotechnical and geologic reports to support project development and decision‑making based on geological findings following ITD report guidelines
  • Serve as project manager for research projects and consultant contracts; review technical documents and reports
  • Provide construction and maintenance support related to geotechnical issues such as embankment failures, washouts, swelling soils, and frost heaves
  • Manage ITD controlled materials sources
  • Assist with emergency response involving geologic instability and authorize corrective actions as necessary
  • Support training, oversight, and technical guidance within the materials and geotechnical teams
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Idaho registration as a professional geologist

or

  • Eligibility for comity registration by the Idaho Board of Registrations for Professional Geologists.

Experience:

  • Evaluating the geologic and environmental implications for one or more of the following types of projects: highways, water storage dams, mine tailings impoundments, and retaining structures
  • Performing location and evaluation of faults
  • Planning and conducting subsurface investigations

Desired

Qualifications:

  • Experience in subsurface exploration related to geotechnical issues
  • Experience in pavement investigation and design
  • Experience with slope stability analysis and mitigation design
  • Able to work on steep rock slopes in any weather condition and lift a minimum of 50 pounds
