Sound Operator
JOB SUMMARY:The Sound Operator is responsible for executing music, sound effects, and other audio elements during New Mexico Goatheads home games and events. This position works closely with the Production Director, PA Announcer, and game presentation staff to create an energetic and professional in-arena atmosphere. The Sound Operator must be able to follow the game presentation rundown while also reacting quickly to unscripted moments and changes in game flow.
This position requires excellent timing, strong musical knowledge, and an understanding of how audio contributes to the overall fan experience.
- Operate the in-arena music and sound playback system during New Mexico Goatheads home games and select events.
- Execute music, stingers, sound effects, and other audio cues during pregame, warmups, stoppages, goals, penalties, intermissions, promotions, and postgame.
- Follow the game presentation rundown and execute scheduled audio elements accurately and on time.
- React appropriately to unscripted game situations and select music or sound effects based on the flow and energy of the event.
- Coordinate closely with the Production Director, PA Announcer, and other production staff.
- Maintain and organize the team's music, sound effect, and audio library.
- Prepare playlists and game-specific audio content prior to events.
- Conduct pregame testing of music playback systems and associated equipment.
- Assist with troubleshooting basic audio and playback issues.
- Attend required production meetings, rehearsals, and sound checks.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Previous experience operating music or audio for live sports, concerts, entertainment, radio, or other live events preferred.
- Strong knowledge of music across a wide variety of genres and eras.
- Knowledge of hockey and the natural flow of a hockey game strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with digital music playback, soundboard, or sports presentation software preferred.
- Excellent timing and ability to execute cues accurately in a live environment.
- Ability to make quick decisions and adapt to changing situations.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to take direction while also working independently when appropriate.
- Reliable and punctual with the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays based on the New Mexico Goatheads home schedule.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others; remain in a stationary production position for extended periods; operate computers, audio equipment, and communications equipment; and move throughout the facility as necessary.
- Must be able to transport, position, or move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds as needed.
- This position requires extended use of computers and audio playback equipment during events.
- Must be able to work in a loud, fast-paced arena environment with exposure to varying noise levels, lighting conditions, and temperatures.
- Must be able to work extended and non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
