Job DescriptionThis posting is for the school year. The position is a 190‑day contract.
School nurses work independently in the school setting under the supervision of a Director of Nursing and Resource Nurse. They manage students with acute and chronic healthcare needs and are responsible for overall management of immunization compliance, healthcare plans, vision and hearing screenings, and delegation of medication administration and procedures to the health assistant. The nurse collaborates with school staff and administrators to provide daily care and health management of students.
Minimum Qualifications- First preference given to a bachelor's degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Associate's degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university, or an institution accredited by the National League of Nursing, or a diploma program in nursing accredited by the National League of Nursing; and enrolled in or actively pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing from a regionally accredited university, or willing to pursue a BSN degree (to be obtained within a maximum of 3 years).
- Has a valid New Mexico registered nurse license issued by the New Mexico Board of Nursing or any successor licensing board for nurses, or a license from another state based on the current compact state license according to New Mexico nursing board rule.
- Current New Mexico Department of Education license appropriate to the assignment or ability to obtain proper licensure within 90 days of hire.
Job Responsibilities
- Identify and report health problems that interfere with student learning through screening procedures, assessments, and evaluations of students.
- Make appropriate referrals based on data obtained from screenings.
- Serve on committees and attend required meetings and conferences.
- Provide consultation and training in school health, safety, health education, sanitation, and counseling to students and staff.
- Provide training in first aid and health screening skills to health assistants.
- Supervise student aides, health aides, and student nurses.
- Conduct special and regular education student screenings.
- Advise and consult with teachers and parents regarding results.
- Supervise students for self‑administered medications.
- Administer medication and specialized healthcare needs to students.
- Implement health management plans with students who have special needs.
- Implement policies and procedures regarding control of communicable diseases in accordance with regulations of the State of New Mexico Environment Department.
- Coordinate and administer immunizations for students and staff.
- Coordinate, administer, and interpret tuberculin testing for staff.
- Maintain student health and immunization records.
- Assist administration in arranging emergency care and first aid for students and staff.
- Arrange transportation for emergency medical care.
- Authorize exclusion and re‑admission of students in connection with infectious, contagious, and nuisance diseases.
- Participate in in‑service training programs, workshops, and continuing education to maintain professional status.
- Maintain current CPR certification.
- Assist Principal in other health‑related assignments.
- Prepare and maintain reports related to activities.
- Make home visits when necessary.
- Maintain communication and professional rapport with students, parents, and staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Work hours are established in the employment contract. Additional work hours may be required as scheduled by the School Principal.
