Job DescriptionThis position is for a short‑term school year, 190‑day contract. The Health Assistant works closely with the school nurse providing acute and chronic health care for students. Must work independently under the direction of the school nurse while following all policies and procedures. Responsibilities include vision and hearing screenings, medication administration, and maintaining school records including electronic health documentation and immunizations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- New Mexico licensure; must hold or be able to obtain a Level 3 K-12 Educational Assistant License
- Must hold or be able to obtain a NMPED Health Assistant License
- Must hold or be able to obtain a Substitute License
Skills/Aptitudes: Maintain current AHA CPR/AED, Red Cross First AID certification. Complete yearly training provided by RRPS on Asthma, Diabetes, Epi Pen Administration, Medication Administration, Diastat Administration, Vision and Hearing Screening, and other health trainings as required by nurse or health services department.
EssentialJob Responsibilities
- Assist in non-professional school health functions and adhere to health room guidelines and RRPS health room policies.
- Maintain school health records, including immunization records and student health records.
- Administer first aid to students and staff.
- Refer students to the school nurse as appropriate.
- Perform routine office and clerical duties.
- Maintain stock of nursing supplies; manage bulletin boards and other information material for the health office.
- Demonstrate respect for confidential information.
- Perform vision, hearing, height, and weight screenings as assigned by the school nurse.
- Maintain professional competence through in‑service education, activities, and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
- Maintain a clean, organized health room environment.
- Refer medical, psychological, or social/emotional problems to the school nurse.
- Administer medication as directed by the principal in accordance with the Rio Rancho Public Schools Medication Policy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Equipment, Tools, and Materials: First aid supplies, scales, thermometer, beds, portable stretchers, vision testing equipment, audiometer, wheelchairs.
Work Hours: In accordance with hours determined by the school district and individual schools within the parameters of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
