Water Utility Line Locator
We're hiring a Water Utility Line Locator responsible for identifying and marking the location of underground utility lines and infrastructure (water and wastewater). This role also assists as needed with installs, locates, and repairs of water distribution infrastructure — including water mains, service lines, hydrants, valves, PRVs, and meters. This is a union position with strong benefits and a clear certification path.
Pay: $26.20 per hour.
What You'll Do
- Locate and mark underground water, wastewater, and reclaimed water services using provided maps and tools
- Perform routine servicing and corrective maintenance of water and wastewater systems
- Read diagrams, as-builts, and maps to determine underground utility locations
- Review and interpret plans and design drawings to locate underground utilities
- Clean vehicles, heavy equipment, pumps, tools, and other stationary/portable equipment
- Perform routine vehicle/equipment inspections and minor preventive maintenance
- Operate and maintain vehicles and tools to load, unload, haul, and spread materials; dig and refill ditches and trenches
- Maintain grounds and buildings as needed
- Conduct regular site inspections to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of underground utility locations
- Resolve complex technical issues related to underground utility location
- Provide training and support to junior locators as needed
- Respond to pages and on-call shifts as requested by management
What You Bring
- Valid Driver's License (State of New Mexico)
- High school diploma or GED
- Knowledge of underground water utility systems
- 2–5 years of experience in line locating
- 2–5 years of experience working in the water utility field
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Digital literacy (e.g., Maintenance Connection, Ion City, phone-based tools)
- Familiarity with hand and power tools used in vehicle/equipment/structure maintenance
- Commitment to safety and quality in all aspects of work
Preferred Qualifications
- New Mexico Class A Commercial Driver's License
- Advanced knowledge of operations and maintenance of water systems
- New Mexico Water Supply 1 or 2, and/or Water Distribution System 1 or 2 (or ability to obtain within 2 years)
- Advanced knowledge of underground water utility systems
