Instructional Assistant I

Definition
Under supervision, observes and monitors students, facilities, and parking area of assigned school; and performs routine clerical duties in support of school operations.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry level class in the Instructional Assistant series. This class is distinguished from the Instructional Assistant II, which requires the performance of more complex tasks and duties assisting students in the classroom and providing support to teachers which require ability to work with written materials and prepare written reports. This class differs from Instructional Assistant III in that the latter requires additional training for assisting students that have learning or physical disabilities.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives general supervision from Principal, Vice Principal, or assigned teacher.

Knowledge of:
Rules and regulations concerning school campus control, security, and safety.
Techniques and methods of student supervision.
Acceptable methods used in controlling students in various situations, Student behavior management strategies and techniques.
Effective methods of controlling student behavior.
Basic English, grammar, and arithmetic.
Modern office methods, procedures, and equipment.
Basic first aid and CPR.
Ability to:
Supervise, monitor and assist students.
Work effectively with students.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, effectively with adults and students.
Maintain emotional control and composure under stressful situations and in difficult situations; effectively react to emergencies.
Perform effectively and assertively in situations requiring tact, diplomacy and good judgment.
Appropriately manage student behavior and guide students toward acceptable social behavior. Perform routine clerical work.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
