Correctional Officer 2

Responsible for correctional work at an average difficulty level, including supervision of inmates, patrol, inspection, and reporting. The position includes responsibilities such as supervising inmate activities, inspecting grounds, checking in new inmates, counseling, attending meetings, preparing reports, operating equipment, ensuring safety, breaking up fights, and explaining policies.

Qualifications

Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school or GED and one (1) year of full‑time adult correctional security work experience. Experience as a Correctional Officer with the State of Tennessee may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

  • Must be 18 years or older, a citizen of the United States, and possess a good moral character.
  • Must be able to qualify, carry, and use assigned weapons.
  • Must have no felony convictions or be discharged without honor from armed services.
  • Must pass criminal history disclosure, fingerprint sample, physical examination, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license if required.
  • Must complete pre‑employment screening and a course at the Tennessee Correction Academy upon appointment.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, and address medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs.
  • Inspect and patrol the grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
  • Check in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
  • Observe inmate behavior, counsel inmates and families, evaluate hygiene and attitudes, and send evaluations to counseling.
  • Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
  • Prepare reports such as daily logs, disciplinary reports, records of inmates' jobs and pay, daily inmate counts, and requisitions for office supplies.
  • Operate and utilize equipment including two‑way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and motor vehicles.
  • Ensure safety of residents through supervision of daily activity.
  • Break up fights or other potentially dangerous situations by persuasion or use of physical force.
  • Carry out and explain existing policies and procedures to others.
