General Function: This position is responsible for engaging all customers who pass by the meat department in conversation, especially related to sales and service. Provides recipes, meal ideas, solutions for customers’ daily meals, and special event entertaining based on product knowledge in the meat department and possible cross‑merchandising with other departments. Coordinates the packaging of product for customers’ ease of preparation and pick up.

Meat Clerks
- Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
- Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
- Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible.
- Assist customers by escorting them to the products they’re looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests, performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.
- Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking product orders.
- Work with co‑workers as a team and provide training to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
- Engage all customers who pass by the meat department in conversation, especially related to sales and service.
- Provide recipes, meal ideas, solutions for customers’ daily meals, and special event entertaining based on product knowledge in the meat department and possible cross‑merchandising with other departments.
- Coordinate the packaging of product for customers’ ease of preparation and pick up.
- Schedule and oversee product demonstrations in the meat department.
- Coordinate special meat cuts as required.
- Communicate to customers on phone, in person, or via e‑mail regarding food and food preparation.
- Advise customers regarding food safety, refrigeration and proper food preparation.
- Ensure new items are ordered as requested by customers.
- Attend company‑wide and industry meetings as assigned.
- Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines.
- Report to work when scheduled and on time.
- Stay current regarding meal trends and menu planning, etc.
- Assist in other areas of store as needed.
- Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required.
- Instruct, assign, review and plan work of others.
- Maintain standards, coordinate activities, allocate personnel, act on employee problems, and select new employees.
- Has authority to approve employee discipline.
- Has authority to recommend employee transfer, discharge and salary increases.
- Ability to do logical or scientific thinking to solve problems with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages.
- Ability to compose original correspondence; follow technical manuals and have increased contact with people, talk with customers to identify their requests; guide people and provide basic direction.
- High School or equivalent.
- CBT regarding cooking/meal preparation, Hy‑Vee food safety training.
- Dale Carnegie training encouraged.
