OverviewAs a strategic thought leader
, the Manager of Mechanical Engineering drives technical excellence by aligning engineering outputs with broader business imperatives. This role requires applying strategic foresight to product development and project management while inspiring a diverse team to meet short and long-term goals. The Manager acts as both a technical authority and a people developer, translating organizational goals into execution plans and cultivating a high-performance environment through dedicated coaching and career planning.
The manager exercises a high degree of independent judgment on diverse and specialized projects; position plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the work of staff assigned to various projects.
- Lead a mechanical based engineering team and associated resources across all ALS platforms
- Drive a culture of engineering rigor, collaboration, structured problem solving, triage, and urgency in engineering
- Advocate for the use of structured problem‑solving tools (8D, etc.) and technical approaches (DFSS, etc.)
- Working in partnership with the VP of Engineering, manufacturing, field support/service, product management, supply chain leaders, and others across the company platform to manage and clearly communicate priorities and expectations for the Ripon engineering team
- Drive an aggressive transformation of approaches to CAD, engineering tools, and rigorous design approaches to improve the engineering team's effectiveness and efficiency
- Develop and manage to effective KPIs to monitor the engineering team's progress and evolution
- Strongly advocate for new and more effective approaches
- Manage assigned engineering resources to budget and to meet or exceed on time delivery targets
- Effectively balance and assign resources to deliver on expectations
- Size, adjust, and evolve engineering resources to create an effective team within defined budget and headcount targets.
- Guide and mentor engineering resources to drive engineering excellence, rigor, and urgency.
- Drive team culture and team member growth and development.
- Build an internal bench of future leaders and critical-skill talent.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering:
Mechanical, Electrical, Engineering Management required. - At least 8 years of engineering experience
- At least 3 years of indirect leadership experience
- Outstanding organizational, communication, interpersonal, relationship building skills
- Ability to establish credibility and rapport across the organization with technical and non-technical team members alike
- Strong project and time management skills
- Solid data analysis and reporting skills
- Works well in a cross-functional, matrix management environment, as well as lead multiple engineering skill sets
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, engage, motivate, and develop employees directly reporting to this position.
- Ability to gain the cooperation of other functional groups within the company, establish and maintain good working relationships with both internal and external partners.
- Must be able to think strategically and function tactically and positively, creating a highly productive work environment.
- Ability to function calmly in a fast-paced environment managing multiple priorities simultaneously
- Positively manage situations of a dynamic nature; be able to modify plans, actions, and decisions in light of changing situations and circumstances while still meeting, or proposing modified, deadlines.
- Travel on an as‑needed basis, up to 25% of the time.
