Position: Maintenance Technician I or Maintenance Technician II (CDL Required)

The Opportunity

The Town of Riverdale Park is seeking dependable, safety-minded candidates for the Maintenance Technician I/II position. This position helps keep Town streets, sidewalks, facilities, parks, public spaces, vehicles, and equipment safe, clean, functional, and well-maintained. The selected candidate may be appointed at Level I or Level II based on experience, training, licenses, and demonstrated ability.

Schedule:

Full-time; emergency, overtime, weekend, and inclement-weather work may be required

Reports To:

Assigned Team Lead and departmental management

What You Will Do
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, buildings, parks, signs, planters, tree boxes, stormwater inlets, and other public infrastructure.
  • Support snow and ice removal, storm response, traffic control, special events, and other emergency operations.
  • Perform grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, watering, weeding, litter removal, and related work.
  • Clean and maintain public facilities, restrooms, work areas, tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Operate Town vehicles, hand and power tools, and assigned construction or maintenance equipment within the limits of training and licensure.
  • Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and promptly report unsafe conditions, damage, or maintenance needs.
  • Set up and maintain safe work zones and follow all safety procedures and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Interact professionally with residents, coworkers, contractors, and the public, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Level Placement Maintenance Technician I

Experience:

Entry/development level. Relevant experience in maintenance, construction, landscaping, facilities, fleet, or public works is preferred.

Driver's License:
Valid noncommercial driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

Work Assignment:
Performs routine assignments under direction and operates equipment consistent with training and licensure.

Maintenance Technician II

Experience:

Journey-level placement. At least three years of progressively responsible related experience is preferred.

Driver's License:
Valid Maryland Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and an acceptable driving record are required at the appointment.

Work Assignment:
Independently performs skilled assignments and operates CDL-required vehicles and higher-level equipment consistent with training and endorsements.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the work.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, perform basic math, use sound judgment, and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions and to report for emergency operations when required.
  • Maintenance Technician II only: valid Maryland Class A or Class B CDL  employee must maintain the required CDL, endorsements, and medical qualification throughout employment in the Level II position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in municipal public works, general construction, building maintenance, grounds maintenance, and equipment operation.
  • Flagger, tree maintenance, CPR, AED, or First Aid certification.
  • For Level I candidates, possession of a CDL or a demonstrated ability and willingness to obtain one may support future advancement to Level II, subject to Town requirements and the availability of a position.
Physical and Working Conditions

This is a physically demanding fieldwork. Duties regularly require standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, and working around traffic, construction equipment, uneven terrain, noise, dust, fumes, and changing weather. The employee must be able to frequently lift, carry, and move more than 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation, and must have the communication, hearing, and visual abilities necessary to safely perform assigned duties.

Appointment is contingent upon successful completion of the Town’s pre-employment requirements, which may include verification of qualifications, driving record review, background investigation, pre-employment physical examination, and drug and alcohol testing when applicable. Employees assigned to CDL-covered duties are subject to applicable U.S. Department of Transportation testing and qualification requirements.
