Role Overview
Assistant Structures Representative in HDR is responsible for performing construction inspections, calculations, documentation, and collaboration with Caltrans and contractors, ensuring compliance with plans and regulations.
Responsibilities- Perform construction inspections in the field to ensure materials and workmanship conform to approved plans and specifications, including approved changes.
- Take appropriate action when materials and workmanship are non‑conforming, including ordering removal and replacement of non‑conforming work.
- Calculate proper alignment and placement of bridge and structure elements, establish surveying control lines and grades according to Caltrans Structure Construction Practices & Procedures.
- Assist the Structures Representative with calculations related to shop drawings, informational and action submittals received from the construction contractor.
- Conferring with the construction contractor regarding compliance with plans, quality of work, construction activity and Cal/OSHA regulations; collaborate with other project personnel on regulatory permit agency requirements.
- Assist in preparing contract‑related documents such as change orders, quantity and estimate reports, potential claim reports, letters, and RFI responses; complete daily diaries of contractor activities.
- Assist the Structures Representative and Resident Engineer in recording and filing project‑related records such as daily reports, submittals, shop drawings, monthly pay estimates, and job expenditures.
- Conduct verification sampling and tests to confirm acceptability of construction materials per ASTM or CT methods.
- Remain flexible to work days, nights, and weekends in heavy construction, including challenging site conditions.
- Minimum 2 years of education beyond high school in engineering or surveying with relevant coursework.
- Minimum 4 years of experience inspecting structure construction on highways or major public works projects.
- Valid driver's license, valid First Aid certificate, and certification in ASTM or CT sampling and testing of fresh Portland cement concrete.
- Construction surveying experience for control lines and grades per Structure Construction Practices.
- Proven problem‑solving and documentation abilities.
- Proficient verbal communication skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent (or 8 years of relevant experience may substitute).
- Minimum 5 years experience in relevant field.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Strong written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
