Position Description

The Department of Sociology at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Teaching beginning July 1, 2026. This position is equivalent in level to other Assistant Professor positions, but with an emphasis on excellence in teaching and teaching-related activities. The position is open in terms of areas of emphasis. Completion of a PhD in Sociology is required prior to the July 1 start date.

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Teach six classes across three quarters yearly.
  • Provide outstanding teaching and develop innovative instructional materials.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality professional activity (e.g., research on pedagogy and/or sociology).
  • Provide service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university.
  • Advance through faculty ranks based on structured, merit‑based evaluations occurring every 2‑3 years.

Hiring priorities (interests):

  • Proven record of teaching excellence beyond teaching assistant experience.
  • Prepared to teach required core courses at the lower and upper division.
  • Desire to equip students with concrete skill sets such as problem‑solving, technological proficiency, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and strong written and oral communication.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications

Completion of a PhD in Sociology required prior to July 1, 2026.
