Salary: $59,000 ‑ $81,200 per year
The University Honors Counselor is responsible for providing counseling services to a diverse caseload of approximately 250 University Honors students. Using developmental advising principles and a knowledge of teaching and learning theory, the incumbent promotes student development and academic success by guiding students in making a successful transition to university‑level academics; satisfying University Honors requirements and responsibilities; developing leadership and team‑building skills;
participating in campus and community service; pursuing involvement in high‑impact educational experiences; conducting undergraduate research; and completing a capstone project. The incumbent works with dedicated University Honors faculty and professors who mentor students on their capstone projects, and collaborates with academic advisors in the colleges and departments to ensure that students are making progress toward their academic goals.
The position provides program management in the following areas of academic support for University Honors students: outreach and recruitment, living‑learning communities, alumni relations, and development and fundraising. As such, this position serves as the University Honors liaison to Housing and Residential Life, to the Honors Transfer Council of California (HTCC), to the Honors Alumni Board, and coordinates event/activity management for the above programs and the University Honors Cording Ceremony.
The ideal candidate enjoys outreach and recruitment, initiating and developing connections with students, campus departments, alumni, staff, faculty, and parents; speaks confidently in presentations and tabling; has a heart for serving a diverse group of students in the Inland Empire; and is truly passionate about and believes in student development and counseling.
Applicants may be required to provide a presentation as part of the interview process.
Education Requirements• Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Master’s degree in a related area (required).
Experience Requirements• Experience analyzing and interpreting policies, procedures, and guidelines and evaluating complex concepts.
• Experience with student academic program administration across all class levels (freshman through senior).
• 4 – 7 years of related experience (required).
Minimum Requirements• Travel outside of normal business hours required.
Preferred Qualifications- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, e‑mail messaging, web‑based software applications, and a student information system.
- Knowledge of academic curricula.
- Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note‑taking, test‑taking, time management, and goal setting.
- Knowledge of learning skills issues in a research institution.
- Skill in working independently, setting priorities, and completing assignments with minimal direction.
- Problem‑solving and organizational skills.
- Skills in judgment and decision‑making.
- Knowledge of FERPA and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Familiarity with alumni relations, development, and fundraising.
- Multicultural competencies and experience working effectively with diverse groups.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Skill in accurate record‑keeping with strict attention to detail.
- Knowledge of research and theoretical models influencing academic services.
- Experienced knowledge of learning theory, learning styles, affective, academic, and socio‑cultural issues applied to student support.
- Knowledge of program development, data gathering, assessment, and evaluation skills.
- Familiarity with outreach/recruitment and admissions.
- Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.
- May require knowledge of NCAA policies, rules, and regulations.
