Overview
The County of Riverside Transportation Department Survey Division is seeking an Associate Land Surveyor (Associate Surveyor). The role may be assigned to the office or to the field in Riverside.
Responsibilities (Office)- Map preparation, map checking (Parcel Map, Tract Map, Records of Survey), corner record checking, minor land case review (Parcel Mergers, Lot Line Adjustments, Certificates of Compliance), boundary analysis.
- Research historical and official records, CADD drafting, reduce/analyze field data, compute horizontal alignments, create 3‑D surface models from survey points, process drone data, prepare plats and exhibits.
- Write and review legal descriptions for land acquisitions, provide customer service, assist customers at public research counter, provide resolution to boundary issues and discrepancies.
- Preliminary, boundary, design, topographic, GPS, geodetic, right‑of‑way, photogrammetric, and construction surveys.
- Reduce and analyze field observations, edit CADD data, compute horizontal and vertical alignments, generate cut sheets for construction staking, conduct land records research for capital improvement projects.
- Option I:
Two years as an Engineering Technician II for Riverside County, or five years of sub‑professional surveying (associate's degree or higher in surveying, geomatics, geospatial engineering, or related field may substitute for one or more years). - Option II:
One year as a Senior Engineering Technician for Riverside County, or two years of sub‑professional surveying (associate's degree or higher in surveying, geomatics, geospatial engineering, or related field may substitute for one or more years). - Robust knowledge of surveying principles as outlined in the California Professional Land Surveyor's Act and Subdivision Map Act.
- Demonstrated ability to lead staff, train crew members, strong interpersonal skills to communicate with County staff and contractors.
- Experience surveying for a government entity; proficiency with Civil 3D and Micro Station drafting platforms highly desired.
- Advanced mathematical concepts (algebra, geometry).
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, ordinances relating to surveying practices, subdivisions, boundary locations, mapping.
- Survey theory, tools, and principles for technical maps, exhibits, drawings, models at survey precision.
- Operation and use of mapping software and equipment related to land surveying.
- Principles and processes for providing customer service.
- Survey, design, planning, construction, photogrammetry, right‑of‑way, land acquisition principles and practices.
- Technical report writing and preparation.
- Read and interpret maps, diagrams, survey records, data.
- Adjust survey data, perform difficult survey analysis.
- Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing.
- Prepare complex technical reports and correspondence.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
The Associate Surveyor will perform duties both in the office and in the field. Office work involves handling large‑format survey maps, blueprints, and paper registers. Fieldwork involves outdoor surveying in various environments and weather conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, wind, and uneven terrain. The position requires independent physical mobility and the ability to lift and transport survey instruments and tools – such as GPS units, Total Stations, Levels, tripods, measuring wheels, and survey stakes – weighing up to 50 pounds.

- Valid California Driver's License.
- A valid Land Surveyor‑in‑Training (L.S.I.T.) certificate.
