Description

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

DEFINITION Under direct to general supervision, performs routine drafting and general sub-professional engineering office work; provides accurate engineering information to contractors, developers, public agencies, utility companies and the general public; prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes for engineering purposes, according to specified procedures; and performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Engineering Intern class is a part-time non-benefitted (hourly) classification in which current students within a University system who are seeking an engineering career and degree can receive on the-job training and experience in the performance of routine and sub-professional engineering office work. Work assignments are closely monitored and reviewed primarily for technical accuracy and quality of production. Employees learn to apply concept and work procedures and methods in assigned area of responsibility ad to resolve provokes and issues that are specific less complex, and/or repetitive.

Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise working solely with the supervisor. The Engineering Intern class intended for a period not to exceed one (1) year for recent engineering graduates, and not to exceed two (2) years for current engineering students.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives direct to general supervision from professional level engineering staff.

After successfully passing the screening process an invitation will be sent out to candidates to take an online performance exam.
Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Accumulates, indexes, catalogs, and files records, maps and plans, engineering assessment district fees, and surveying information.
2. Provides information regarding public works projects, status of projects underway, location of utilities and standard specifications.
3. Processes public works related permits and tracks and maintains logs on permits issued.
4. Assists engineering staff with elements of current and upcoming plans and projects.
5. Reproduces engineering drawings, tracing and filling in details using computer based software.
6. Installs engineering instrumentation such as traffic counters or survey equipment on-site and assists with technical studies.
7. Assists the public at the counter, via telephone or email with requests and/or complaints, checking plans for compliance with ordinances and standards.
8. Assists in field survey and inspection work in administration of public improvement projects, including setting up instrumentation and compiling data as directed.
9. Tracks and maintains logs of developmental plan check process pertaining to the City Engineering Division.
10. Updates information in the City's Geographical Information System (GIS). 11. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

• Basic principles of mathematics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, computer-based software for drawing, business applications including word processing and spreadsheets.

• Basic knowledge of engineering drafting methods.

• Civil or traffic engineering map drafting.

• Computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) procedures.

• Record keeping, report preparation, and filing systems, principles, procedures, and methods.

• Methods of preparing and processing various records, forms and other documents specific to assigned function or program.
