The Position
The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of Plan Check Engineer to fill one (1) vacancy in the Building and Safety Division of the Community and Economic Development Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
Under general supervision, when assigned to Building and Safety, to perform professional engineering work in the review of construction plans, calculations, and related documents for compliance with applicable building codes, laws, and regulations; to assist the public and design professionals by providing technical guidance; and to perform related work as required.

When assigned to Building and Safety, typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Answer technical questions from engineers, architects, developers, contractors, and the general public regarding City regulations, policies, codes, and permitting processes.
- Assist at the public counter, including explaining requirements, calculating fees, and issuing permits.
- Coordinate plan review and project activities with other City departments, divisions, and outside agencies.
- Maintain accurate records, files, and documentation related to plans, permits, and project activities.
- Conduct field visits or inspections to verify conditions, investigate issues, and support compliance efforts.
- Assist in the preparation of reports, correspondence, and documentation related to project review and processing.
- Participate in development review processes, including review of preliminary plans and coordination of project requirements.
- Perform engineering plan check of construction documents, including plans, specifications, and calculations, for compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Review MEP systems for compliance with the International Code Council model codes and the California Building Standards Code.
- Review architectural building plans for fire and life safety compliance.
- Issue plan check corrections and communicate required revisions to applicants and design professionals.
- Evaluate building permit applications and supporting documents for completeness and code compliance.
- Support complex plan review activities under the direction of senior engineering staff.
- Maintain records of plan review comments, approvals, and permit-related documentation.
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major work in civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, or a closely related field. An Engineering in Training Certificate may substitute for two years of education.
Experience: Two years of professional experience in engineering depending on assignment. Two years of experience may substitute for two years of education.
Necessary Special RequirementPossession of an appropriate, valid class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
