Field Engineering Technician I​/II

About The Position

The County of Riverside's Flood Control and Water Conservation District seeks multiple Field Engineering Technician I/IIs who will be assigned to the Construction and Maintenance division in Riverside. The Engineering Technician I/II performs on-site technical and quality control inspections for the Flood Control and Water Conservation District's public works and developer-funded drainage projects. The Engineering Technician I/II will work on storm drain facilities such as underground pipes, box drains, open channels, levees, and basins, often involving reinforced concrete work, trenching, shoring, utility relocation, soil compaction, and traffic or environmental safety measures.

The Engineering Technician I/II also assists senior staff with maintaining project records, including quantity reports and daily logs, and fosters effective working relationships with contractors, vendors, and project personnel. This position is primarily field-based however, the Engineering Technician I/II will occasionally perform office work.

Competitive candidates will have experience inspecting public works construction projects involving reinforced concrete structures, such as channels, storm drain pipes, roads, walls, or bridges. Additionally, experience in soils and construction materials testing, reading construction plans, use of Bluebeam or similar construction software, use of Microsoft Excel, operation of nuclear testing gauges, and possession of a relevant ACI (American Concreate Institute) certification such as:
Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I Certification, ACI Concrete Testing certification, and/or ACI Aggregate Testing certification are highly desirable.

This position follows a 5/40 schedule, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Subject to change due to business needs.

This position is primarily field based; however, the Engineering Technician I/II will occasionally perform office work.

Engineering Technician I – $26.80 - $42.10 Hourly

Engineering Technician II – $33.35 - $46.80 Hourly

The level at which the position will be filled is at the discretion of the department.

The Engineering Technician I is a natural progression underfill for the Engineering Technician II. Incumbents are eligible to promote to Engineering Technician II upon successful completion of their probationary period, which would include a satisfactory performance evaluation and any additional qualification requirements.

The Riverside County Flood Control and Water Conservation District manages storm waters for conservation and for the protection of watercourses, watersheds, public highways, life and property from flood damage.

• Observe work in progress to ensure construction procedures are followed and that material used conforms to specifications.
• Collect and prepare concrete and soil samples in the field for subsequent laboratory testing and characterization (e.g. moisture content, density, sieve analysis etc.).
• Follow proper procedures and perform accurate testing and computations related to on-site materials, and soil compaction testing as well as laboratory testing and analysis.
• Perform off-site inspections at pre-cast concrete structure manufacturing plants.

Option I

Experience:

Two years of sub-professional civil engineering experience. (Completion of college level courses from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or closely related subjects to the assignment such as land surveying, soils erosion, soils testing, blueprint reading, mathematics, computer graphics, or hydrology may substitute for the required experience on the basis of 12 semester or 18 quarter units equaling one year of the required full-time experience.)
